Resource icon labels and town center placement

Played Farthest Frontier a few months ago, but paused for a while awaiting new content. Have just come back for the 0.9 playtest.

Having been away for a bit, I’d forgotten what all the resource icons represent. They are very artistic, but really not immediately readable, especially if we’re talking about different kinds of berries, grain, or ores. And for a brand new player, completely mysterious, especially when they’re grayed out (out of season). Even though I’d played before, it took me a while to recall what the heck the “tallow” icon represented… not being something I interact with in my daily life

This is especially noticeable when just starting a new game, which begins with the town center attached to the cursor while you scroll around looking for where to put it. There’s now a nice window showing what’s in range of the town center, but it only displays those cryptic icons >< You get the advice to look for iron, coal etc, but with no guidance as to what icons represent those items.

So I have two suggestions:

  1. All icons should display a text label when the mouse is over them, everywhere in the interface. On the map, top bar, in dialog boxes, everywhere.

  2. At game start, PLEASE detach the town center from the cursor while the player looks around! That way we can hover over the icons and figure out what we’re actually looking at while surveying the map.

Just need a button on the screen that will attach the town center to the cursor, or the equivalent, when we’re ready to place it. Dragging the center around for 15 minutes while trying to make a good choice just feels like a lot of work… and if you accidentally click and place it, have to reroll to undo that. Particularly since this is one of the most consequential decisions a player will make, it would be much more friendly to detach the “surveying” activity from the “place town center” task.

Thanks! Great game, really excited to test the new religion system and all the rest of the improvements
