Just in time for launch week, my first 1000 population settlement: Grundlewood! I’ve started many settlements during the 1.0 playtest (and a few before), but this is the first time I felt happy enough with how the city developed to actually see it through to year 48.

Here you can see the town’s oldest neighborhood, in the northeastern quadrant of the city (the camera is facing northwest). Just north of the town center, you can see an old-growth grove, the heart of the Grundlewood itself. When the settlement was new, there was heated debate over whether the exploit the land and timber in this area. The preservationists won, and logging efforts were permitted only on the heavily wooded hill to the northeast. Those efforts have since ceased, and the area has been partially reclaimed as woodland, though the hilltop is now home to Grundlewood’s most important defensive structure.

From atop the tall mountain west of town, one can just make out the industrial district peaking through the largely undeveloped woodland to the west and southwest, as well as the main agricultural zone to the northwest of town.

Moving to the south of town, another, smaller mountain is the source of much of the stone that paves the streets of Grundlewood. To the southwest, we have a quiet neighborhood nestled in the arms of the old forest, popular with those for whom the forest holds spiritual fascination. To the east, across the mountain road, Grundlewood’s newest neighborhood is still being constructed on what was once open, unfertile ground between the southern mountain and the eastern fields. The residents have planted many trees here, extending the wood’s reach and symbolizing the spirit of harmony with nature that is characteristic of this settlement.
