Soldiers and barracks to expensive?

It seems you can almost do without soldiers in the game if you build enought watch towers. Building barracks is expensive and it makes you wonder if they are two expensive? Especially as the raiders do mostly that, a quick raid in and out. In order to be in the right place at the right time with the soldiers you may ahve to build more than one barrack and that raises the cost considerably.

In my next scenario I am going to create clear paths to my gold repository, the town centre and the main warehouse, no walls bar those around the towers and the above items, a fortress in the centre and market suburbs scattered all over the map.

I have 14 barracks and they are cheap. 2 troops for 10 gold vs 2 for 12 in a tower.
They are much tougher and do more damage. I have ZERO towers. You get to
send out troops from them also.

As for raider just make all outer roads lead to a choke point. Then it is easy to kill
them all.

@Groovy @kendy4thestate , Interesting. I may try that. Groovy, how many soldiers do you have in the 14 barracks? I find towers are working well. A downside is that they require a lot of guards. I have just over 80 in the towers around my village. But I use them as labour between raids. In addition to that I have 8 soldiers that I can allocate to any area where the wall gets pentrated. The last raid was with 190 or so radiers and the wall got breached but not one raider entered the actual village. Where do you find out the cost of the different options?

well i have just 2 defenders in each of 12 of the barracks. I guess you could
call them epic towers and they are in the areas where the raiders almost never go.
The other 2 barracks I have them maxed at 24. That is the choke point. So 72 soldiers
total.

I don’t need them for labor I have always 150+ free workers. So they stay put in the
barracks all year around. My town is on year 1673 and I have 1.4 million gold. No
raiders have breached it since like 1500 years ago before I had walls. lol

Every attack on me is 200+ raiders, Right now I’m at 890 people because of the mass
die off bug. (go look in the 8.2 testing thread I posted the NASTY bug there. I lost 282
people in like 10 seconds)

when you click a tower or barracks it shows the cost there in the upper window area.
IIRC towers are 12 gold for 1 and/or 2 troops. Barracks are 5 gold each troop and
IIRC 25 each recruitment. I do not pay attention to gold anymore because I have so
much. I just buy what I need and half my buildings I deleted years ago. Less buildings
less workers needed and less buildings to repair so even less workers needed and
less materials needed etc… Smaller town foot print means less tower/barracks
needed to cover everything. Also means less travel time for the people. Cutting
down your expenses is as important as income if not more so lol

Wow, there are some impressive numbers in that post @Groovy ! Where to start? Have you had one village for 1673 years? How long has that taken you? My current village is 94 years.

And 1.4 million in gold?!?! How on earth did you manage that? And here I was pretty pleased with my 38.000.- If I extrapolate that for 1673 years I still only get 640 or so thousands. Very impressive. I guess you don’t need to tink about resources then, you just buy what you need? But do all resources eventually come up for sale?

You have 12 barracks in areas where radiers never go? Why in locations raiders never go? One would have thought the oposite would be the obvious choise?

And with 150+ workders and 72 soldiers, you must have slimmed your production lines quite a lot? But on the other hand if you buy stuff you don’t need people working to produce the goods? On the other hand again, you need productions to sell goods to achive those astronomical amounts?

I am currently at 952 inhabitants and the goal for this village is to see how close to 1000 I can get and maintain that population. A bug loosing close to 300 individuals in a short time sounds like a real disaster deal. How did you upgrade to the 8.2 version?

EDIT: How many fields do you have?

Thanks Medea!

that is my very first village a have a few others but i play that one the most.
I think just over 300 hours I bought the game just after it first came out.

My gold mines depleted about 1400 years ago. lol

Same for sand and clay and coal. I have a few iron sites left but meh i just buy the iron bars.
All the workers on mines and support of those mines are better used elsewhere. example
you can make/keep WAY MORE gold putting them on a high value item to sell like candles
since wax is free because farmers have plenty of time to do both crops and bees.
Also it is important to have something to sell even though the traders might only bring
15K of gold in a year. The reason is as an example when you buy spice (which makes
you HUGE income) Sure you can make 5K a year from gold mines but that is not enough
to cover huge purchases. Ill buy 40K of spice each time and this is when the workers
making items is better than mining. Keeping your costs down is more important than
straight up gold income from mines. Yes all resources come up for sale.

I said almost never lol They attack those areas but very rare and when they do
I deploy the max barracks troops to them in open field battle (which is the most fun
I have in the game. I do open field battles the most because it is so fun. I could
just sit back behind the walls but that is boring lol

BTW if i move those barracks or delete them THEN the raiders attack those areas
a lot. So you have to keep a token force there so they use the roads to my choke point.
The AI is bad but not that bad lol

yes I’d say half the buildings have been deleted. I focus on the items the traders want the most or items I need the most that cost too much gold to buy. Yes it frees up a lot of workers.
I have 96 workers just on candles. none on clothes. I buy all clothes. They are cheap and last awhile. etc…

the public play testing look around in forum it is it easy to do. The down side
of course is you may get hit by nasty bugs.

12 fields and 60 bee hives currently and 12 barns lol
