SPOILER ALERT: Lore Discussion

Hmm, who is Kra’vall? Name does not ring a bell yet.
And yeah, a lot of these “visual novel” JRPGs are a lot like that.
So are these new items in the game already? Anyone knows when/how they drop them, above level 75 only or so?

I dunno, the stuff in the fleshworks is rather the stuff of nightmares, really. Then again knowing “everything has an audience” I know there must be people out there who find even that arousing…
Btw, since you brought up the Womb, what was Krieg’s plan there really? Were they using the women to birth normal, regular humans whom they can possess? Or they were creating fleshwarped aberrations? I mean I don’t see how making babies to possess would be useful for the Aetherials, unless they have some ability to rapidly age them to adulthood. It did kind of remind me of the similarly horrifying way the Borg (on Star Trek) are “born”.

It is? Never noticed as I only saw the item icons online. But I wish we had a way to view items equipped on our character from closer. The closest we can come is viewing the character from the main menu, but in-game, you simply cannot zoom close enough to see the details. Took me a while to realize the Razor of the Blind Assassin did not have glitchy textures, it had really finely serrated edges.

Thought I’d post it here - the Loghorrean’s Corruption, as the Monster Infrequent shoulders are called, now drops already. Might be a bug, as the item icon is just an Ascendant Pauldron.

And yes, the tentacles do move ever so slightly. Brrrr…

Btw, that reminds me -always wondered, just how big is the Loghorrean? What you fight… might be just its head? After all, the level you go through to get to it is cracked all over, revealing nothing but emptiness and tons and tons of tentacles underneath.

Apologies if this has already been asked elsewhere in the thread, but does anyone have recommendations for a good write-up of the lore of Cairn? I mean, other than going back and reading through every note I’ve collected over the course of the game.

Kickstarter campaign to hire Brandon Sanderson to write a Grim Dawn trilogy, bet he’ll bang it out in 2 months.

I’d kickstart a TV show for Grim Dawn… would beat the hell out of Walking Dead!

That show is basically a walking dead itself at this point.

Yeah, it’s what, season 6 or 7? And they only gotten around to have their version of Cronley yet…

So, umm, anyone noticed, Dahlia’s husband Oliver Thornsbury is just… gone? I think he used to be standing around the back of the platform, behind the people you save from the Blood Grove, but he disappeared. Odd, because you can still ask Dahlia in Mourndale what her husband thinks about her disappearing like this.
Oh and there is new dialogue for their kid, Lisa - she tells you her momma left for Malmouth. You can tell her about returning her mother’s book.

He can be found in Thronsbury farm outside Homestead
It is the same farm from where you retrieve Dahlia’s Diary

Oh, I see! I guess he moved there after we clean up the place.

Btw - some monsters got new sounds and voices since the patch:
-Fleshweavers/shapers/Architects of Flesh now speak similar to Reanimators when killed, though I cannot really make out much of what they say.
-Aetherial Scamps/Imps have new sounds, and… well, I suspected even before what these aberrations are, but their new wailings and “momma” sounds, as well as one specific Ugdenbog Coven Bounty pretty much confirms that yes, you are fighting Aether-mutated, exploding babies. Creepy…
-Ascended Apprentices/Spellbreakers/Myrmidons also speak now when dying, and they can spawn Aetherial Wraiths on death.

Lisa? Who is she and where can I find her? I have been overseas for the past 2 weeks so a bit out of touch right now :frowning:

The kid in Homestead, in the upper platform, has a doll on a seat next to her.

Hmm, another update! Seems now we have more to do with the unfortunate quest of Rictor and Vivien in the Steelcap District. Sadly you still can do nothing to save Rictor and have to leave him behind, but he now also directs you to his shop where he stashed some supplies you can get.

Creed does talk about them, once you reach the necropolis you can ask him about it. He says the war was between Erulan and the western nation of Carinea over Ikon and the lands surrounding it. Since Ikon is about as far west as our map pans, it’s probably not on our map.

Edit: after talking with Captain Somer, she talks about the North Wars and Fort Ikon’s construction 300 years prior. If Carinea is the same nation Erulan fought in the North Wars then it does not exist anymore. The Black Legion, while still relatively new, marched to their capital and crushed them when they went to war again.

I am also curious as to what other nations are doing and to what extent have the Aetherials invaded their lands. It would be interesting to find notes that hint at correspondence between Aetherials in other parts of the world.

Also, it may have been already posted but does anyone have any educated guesses to where Erulan (the city) is? In the expansion Creed mentions that Ulgrim and him split up in at the capital and he went scouting down past Malmouth and through Ugdenbog to Burrwitch where we found him. So Erulan could be farther north then our map shows.

Well I would doubt by “crushed them” they mean they killed everyone… more like, Erulan probably conquered them and they now exist as a vassal state of sorts.
Since the Aetherials can get to Cairn anywhere - where Arcanists have started practicing, as Allostria explains - I would assume they have invaded the whole planet, not just Erulan.

The people were fleeing from the capital through the Darkvale gate, as we learn from the mayor’s notes, so I think it was somewhere up north, probably above the sea in the middle of the map, but likely further north than Malmouth. Given that I assume it now looks much the same as Malmouth, I doubt we will see it in any expansion.

Either that or they’ve been just completely assimilated into Erulan after 300 years. Most people probably only remember it as the nation they fought over Ikon and the surroudings. Creed is the only one to know the name of the nation and it’s probably only because he had access to the Inquisitor Archives in Erulan, which sadly, is probably lost. I wonder if the Vault of the Luminari still stands and if we’ll be able to access it in a later expansion. It’s described as impenetrable but that was probably before riftgates.

Well, likely Ulgrim knows too… he was there. And yeah, would be nice to visit there!
Something I never understood fully from the Necropolis texts and what Creed tells us about the war… so after the Loghorrean was summoned, what happened? Was it defeated, chopped into little pieces, put into crates and locked under the Necropolis? That note you find about the prisoners locked in with the crates… so does this mean the Loghorrean somehow regenerated? Given what state the lowest level is in, I doubt it grew all those tentacles in the few days or weeks that took Thalonis to awaken him. Oh and that’s the other thing, so the Bloodsworn only needed the blood to break the seals locking the Loghorrean inside?

This is all speculation but I think that after it was summoned the first time they realized what a grave mistake it was and tried to kill it. We all know that killing Log in the real world doesn’t actually kill it, you have to go into the void itself to kill it. They probably didn’t have the means to do that back then (or didn’t know that’s how to kill it) so they did the next best thing and sealed it in the void so it couldn’t come back on its own or be summoned elsewhere.

When we find Ulgrim in the void, he’s in a room that is very similar if not identical to the one where we fought Log in the real world. So I think after it was sent back the first time, it was just waiting there (Thalonis mentioned slumber in his note) until the seals weakened and were destroyed and it just popped right back up in our world.

I have no clue what happened to Log’s body after it was “killed” the first time or if it was just left there (like how we left it haha) and I haven’t worked out what was in the crates yet.

I always thought the Void was just basically a separate dimension unrelated to Cairn, but this probably means that after being banished, the Loghorrean could not come back anywhere else but from the place it was banished?
Well, the other note from an Erulan inquisitor shows what happened to a guy who touched the ichor that was within it, so I assume it was the Loghorrean’s body. Given that Ulgrim was there, it is likely he killed it the first time, too… probably.

No I think you’re right about the Void being a completely different dimension. I mean, the only reason we see buildings inside the void is because they were sucked into it by ch’thonic rifts. Otherwise I would imagine the void looking like the Bastion of Chaos pretty much.

I think banished only partially describes what happened. When I think of banished, I think of sending Aetherials back into the Aether but eventually they can/will come back. The Loghorrean was banished (aka killed) back into the void but it was also sealed there. I think the room where we find Ulgrim in the void was created when the Loghorrean was sealed by the arcanists effectively imprisoning it inside the void itself. Therefore it makes sense that the cultists had to break the seal(s) at the Necropolis first before the Loghorrean could come back to the real world. Once they did that they could have summoned it anywhere they wanted to but it was probably easier to do it there since they had all the blood and the possibly the original ritual circle.

Normally, I’d ask Creed about ch’thonic rituals but we all know what happened last time when he tried to do one haha…

I don’t recall reading that note hmmm… As for Ulgrim, even Creed thinks he was there the first time it was summoned. Maybe he wasn’t an ascendant yet since it took Ulgrim and pretty much an army to defeat Log (I’m tired of typing the Loghorrean every time) while the second time it only took Ulgrim and us. Though, to be fair, maybe Log had just woken up and was still sleepy and we’re definitely not a normal human (Allostria is wrong… we are The Special!)
