i don’t find this particular aspect of the narrative very disruptive. After all, the Three are easily the most active of the gods, even more than Mogdrogen i would say. Even with the secrecy, their cult was clearly active and well stablished. Besides, they have a human origin, they are ascendants, with deep interest in Cairn. Remember that Ulgrim is also some sort of ascendant, and he is VERY active.
Also it was obvius for the those who choosed kymon, that Korvaak was a serius thread that had to be dealth with, specially after we found his Shrine.
The only thing that stirrs me, is the timeline. FG HAS to happen after AoM. The Emisary should reach us in either malmouth, or the coven’s refuge. Otherwise it doesn’t make sense. I get that we shoulded gotten our fair share of fame with the Loghorrean thing (wich, i still think is the most dangerous evil we faced in the entire game lorewise). But we still wouldn’t contacted the coven, neither get enough rep to be approached so casually. So, assuming that FG is the last thing to happen… what follows next makes perfect sense.
Except one thing: I still can’t understand why Menhir and/or Vire don’t show up. No matter what happend to them or their current state, we got 3 major cosmic events in a row, and the most insulted haven’t showed up.
To their eldritch realms. Once the situation was over, there was no reason to stay, specially with the aetherials and chtonians still at large.
What intrigues me the most about them… is The Attendant. I don’t see why he would be cut off, or that temple left behind. I can only imagine that the sentinel was placed by them, so removing or neutralizing him shouldn’t be an issue. It seems like a really big plothole, specially with the Coven having that many messages.
Well Light of Empyrion gives you aether resistance as well as chaos resistance, then again, why would he send army do decimate Empire that worships him as Godfather(gives him power)? Also majority of aetherials do not know about grim dawn, so even if he is with them, there is low chances he is behind attack on Cairn.
I dont know which note or dialogue I read but its clear the WG had a plan: Dreeg will confuse the mind of Kor, Bysmiel will bind him and Solael will strike against it.
On the other hand, it seems Korvaak instead of recovering his powers, he was getting weakened. The notes of the SR talks about anothe cataclysm and how the people were able to dethrone their God.
In that context, I think, storywise, Korvaak is indeed a way to explain how the Gods are the only defense we have against the devourer.
One thing I wanted to mention, surprised nobody has yet…
Marvel comics has a character called Michael Korvac
Traditionally an enemy of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Korvac used to be a mere human, but first gained cybernetic powers and then stole the powers of Elders of the Universe, like the Grandmaster and Galactus himself, becoming a basically god-like power himself.
So I got to the end with my Conjurer who chose the Order of Death’s Vigil (naturally), and here are the differences I found:
-Master Harken (who it seems, shows up twice? Once in the Korvan Plateau and later in the Valley of the Chosen) is obviously much nicer to you. He also knows about Korvaak and you can discuss Kymon with him.
-The group of Chosen you find next to the Infernal Wastes riftgate are still apologetic, and want nothing to do with Kymon anymore, but obviously you cannot rift-gate them home here.
-You can tell Uroboruuk that his disciples are looking for him, but he will dismiss it saying they no longer really need him. He also mentions he left the order to seek out the signs showing the Aetherials and Ch’thonians were up to no good, but could not prevent the grim dawn. You can tell the Keeper about his death but she asks to keep this to yourself.
-Kymon sounds… different? I dunno but as if he sounded more human if you were allied with the Chosen. He warns you to turn back and admits Korvaak is a threat to Cairn but is adamant we need his help againts Ch’thon. Oddly, he talks in lengtht about the witch gods, how they are usurpers and so, something he does not say if you were allied with his old followers.
Also, met and beat the new (not so hidden) super boss, Callagadra. (on Veteran only). The helm he/she drops and its description makes it clear this thing is basically a manifestation of all the fears and terror of the Korvan people as they fled their homes when Korvaak’s trashings destroyed their lands. I assume the Eldritch Realm was open to Cairn when Dreeg let the others in, and some gargoyle from the realm thought it was a nice opportunity to absorb all the fear and grow powerful. Oh and like Mogdrogen or Ravager, this boss has the Celestial type too.
I am not a lore heavy dude, but is Avatar of Mogdrogen suppose to be in 2 places at once? that annoying self righteous hobo really creeps me out!
he is! i punched him a bit at asterkarn but since he is too stronk i left him in tantrum mode so I portal away only to find out he is at the entrance of ancient grove but this time we are okay, he even thank me for what I have done since i cleansed his shrine long time ago. Moved again via portal and he is at the asterkarn still in rage mode! I am confused! He must be bi polar in nature?
I kind of wish this was a bit more direct, like a subtle nod in a note somewhere like if a retreating civilian recalled ‘thinking they saw a force destroying their home, like the sand storm had life but it was likely an illusion’.
I don’t mind Callagadra being a mental eldritch abomination, a sum of all despair and fear of the korvan people that was eventually locked away (probably by the Witch Gods maybe?).
Yeah, I found them as well overall I have to say this makes me feel a little better. She is preaching in the sanctuary. I like Elluvius’ reaction as well. Now I don’t know if the devotions are lore related but empyrion’s one still works and we learn that gods don’t really die as long as people believe in them. Overall crate is a small dev team, and I want to apologise for polluting the thread with my annoyance in the past. :X
The thing is, if we agree that Occultists take their powers from the Witch Gods themselves, I see no reason to not think that the Oathkeeper do the same from Empyrion, Vire, and Menhir (for those not affiliated with the WG). I mean, yeah, you could argue that it’s part of Korvaak’s deception, but then why would you be able to summon and use these powers when you fight Korvaak? It may be just a gameplay/lore discrepancy, but I do think it’s something to consider.
That is a Shrine dedicated to Korvaak. It is a sign that he has supporters all around Cairn, very few if that is. Also if you pay attention during the main campaign there are randomly spawning Korvaak shrines in a lot of more secluded places.
Korvaak`s faith/portfolio/domain is that of the 3 Witch gods combined. As they stole his faith and power they split it between the 3 and “replace” Korvaak in history books to depict themselves as the master of the Eldritch realm (while in fact they are just syphoning the binded Korvaaks divine power).
The salt circle is just for protection - probably for the scholar whose notes we find and it seems it didnt do the job
