Nope, it’s a case of the Wiki not being updated. Ingame it says “her”. I’ve edited the Wiki page to show correctly.
Well, he is a tentacled Chtulhu horror. What else would he be doing without any big eyed japanese schoolgirls to tentacle-hentai?
Btw, he always runs at me right as I enter, so that’s strange he did this with you. He has a giant detection angle and often notices me while I am on the stairs…
Also, he was not summoned at the behest of Ulto Trieg or some bigwig, those idiots whom you saved from Lunal’Valgoth did not change their evil blood gathering ways after all, somehow got here, and decided to atone for their lack of faith by summoning a Ch’thonian fiend to help them. Needless to say, as it often goes with demon summonings in fantasy novels and games too, it ate them first, then decided not to do what he was summoned to do. If you kill those three, you will not meet ol’ (K)ethan here, but a named Stone Gryphon (who actually drops a nice unique helmet).
If you also helped Ravager, he is even less nice about it and calls you an idiot basically, saying if you are the example of humanity than the species is doomed.
He does a 180 if you kill the Ravager though.
In my case he takes a good while before charging at me. If I move down the stairs he immediately acts but if I stand still upon entering the area he won’t notice me at all for a long time.
I don’t want a lecture from a hobo in a deer suit.
He is borderline useless, he gives us no information when asked about Korvaak and Uroboruuk in the base game and yet has the gall to blame us for falling prey to the machinations of three beings who tricked Ulzuin and to some extent even Korvaak.
He idly stands there in the Asterkarn Valley when the beasts of cairn are falling prey to aetherials corruption not too far from him.
The guy is also a big time asshole who tries to kill the person who restored his sorry ass shrine.
Fucking diva.
I hope we get to kill this guy once and for all in GD II.
Then what’s the name of the deity who created it? I could’ve sworn I read it somewhere.
He is marveling at the nice architecture. Even fiends created to get the blood of a fallen god back from all living things appreciate the finer things in life, like art!

Well, if you watched Wagner’s Ring operas, you know it is never a good idea to insult wandering gods, no matter how arrogant they are. Mogdrogen is an ass, yes, but he is a god so this is expected… Plus I was only ever able to kill his avatar on Veteran once, so I am gonna cut him some slack. Remember he could just create more avatars, anywhere. Do you want to upset a guy who could basically appear next to you anywhere, in multiple copies and kill you again and again?
I am pretty sure Bysmiel was always a she. I remember the constellation descriptions, even before we had the whole quest to find the temple of the Three.
That’s something I have not tried yet, but will once I get to Nemesis with them.
I see that it is much easier to farm negative reputation with them than say, with Cronely’s gang.
Well judging from the lore notes Sins of the Forgotten Korvaak seems to be that deity.
I have always gravitated toward summoners. It’s always been that way since I played TQ, and even then I was poring through every affix, lore and minor tidbit relevant to the playstyle. I would spend days upon days turning every iteration of summoner builds upside-down and back again to figure out which worked best.
Obviously Bysmiel was a person of interest because the name kept appearing in a lot of places relevant to what I did.
There was text that seemed to indicate that Korvaak himself may also have been some kind of usurper.
Well the Witch Gods themselves tried to hide all reverence of Korvaak and made people believe he’s the usurper.
Something else. The text that says something about how even before the Korvaan civilization there was already something in there, penned by the same explorer who was able to document the events leading to the fall of Korvaak thanks to the witch gods IIRC.
If I recall correctly, Bysmiel wasn’t really mentioned directly with a gender. Not until the misadventure where it was revealed. And then I remember a lot of people were surprised it was a she.
Exactly my opinion lol! But at least he shows himself unlike those others. Maybe he is the lowest and most grunty hobo god?
question:
from the hidden path lore stones you got from defeating the guardians of the hidden paths, it’s stated that the 3 witch gods and their cults war against each other for a long time… destroying lands, mountains, etc, before solael propose an alliance between them and creating the 3 witch gods’ sanctuary in eastern marsh.
when does this happen? before or after the 3 witch usurp korvaak?
also about mogdrogen, imo he’s afraid for what will happen to cairn and the rovers… he’s also in a weakened condition (he reluctantly asked the taken to clear the grove from corruption, and his shrine in asterkarn is in danger of falling to the void forever if nobody helps him). that’s why mogdrogen mostly choose to stay in the background. though he’s also presenting a tough and mysterious persona to the taken (before the grove) because most people doesn’t want to reveal they’re weak/need help.
Timeline happened something like this:
- The Three gank Korvaak and take his powers for themselves becoming the WG.
- They war with each for dominance.
- The war proved costly for all sides and they agree to the Pact.
That aside, with more background/historical characters introduced in the game as more items and sets are introduced, I wonder about the actual power level of these characters if they are around during the current timeline.
The Black Legion alone has 2 historical sets (Stronghold and Infernal Knight) to their ranks along with Olexra, Barbaros and others. Yet in game, the Black Legion can’t do anything without the Taken doing the heavy lifting for them. The game’s tone made it sound like they would have been overrun eventually in Homestead and Fort Ikon. Could Olexra, Barbaros, et al. have made a difference if they are alive now? Are there no more notable heroes left aside from the Taken that can get shit done?
I find it funny if the 3 really bickers amongst themselves after subduing korvaak together (they walk down the steps of korvaak temple together based on korvan eulogy lore notes or something), then make peace again with each other. makes them kinda similar to daily cartoon characters. but eh. in the end they’re inseparable.
many of the legendary figures mentioned in the gear lores sounds like they lived and died a loooooong time ago (except uroboruuk set, krieg, cronley, bloodsworn leaders, van aldritch, theodin, and some others i forgot). that’s kind of a shame. I’d love to meet some famous arcanists/inquisitors/occultists in game. maybe leading their own factions/band of survivors.
If you’ve seen the Dark Knight movie, remember the intro scene wherein a bunch of bank robbers cooperate together then kill each other once they complete the heist? In the end, the Joker got the money all to himself. I can easily see the newly minted witch gods in their hunger for power attacking their former comrades to consolidate all that power for themselves.
I’d love to see heroes doing their own thing in Grim Dawn 2 too. That’s currently my gripe with the current game and especially the Black Legion, so called “Death’s Bannermen”. Captain Wilfort is skeptical of the Taken (rightfully so) and gushes over the Legion once they came.
What happens in game is that Legion strategist Creed justifies sending the Taken alone to some distant location because of their rift powers and he can’t afford to waste Legion manpower. Once at said location, the legion comes in AND HOLDS THAT GROUND sending the Taken alone to complete the mission. Lets pretend in this example that our Taken is a hardcore character. What happens if the Taken dies? Creed just lost his greatest strategic piece in the war.
It would be nice if in GD2, the Legion or other factions we ally with actually do some noteworthy actions while working together with us. For example, Legion launches a diversionary attack on the Emperor’s palace so our new PC can infiltrate inside. This can even be just something Creed or whoever says in a dialogue and they don’t have to show it ingame (since our PC is busy infiltrating in this example).
Clearly the heroes are exactly that - the Hero-tier enemies we blast through, corrupted by the Aether/Void or pledging themselves to Cronley/KC/ODV.
The Taken just has better gear.
Some of this is just a factor of playing a game. We can’t show hundreds of Black Legion NPCs charging into Necropolis or beating up the Loghorrean with you.
Even Ulgrim assisting you with the Loghorrean eventually needs to be taken out of the equation, otherwise he could hypothetically solo it for you.
The story had always been one of many humans working together to achieve their goals, and we show that to a degree with soldiers fighting alongside you in the streets, characters you allied with showing up when you claim a vanguard.
But for gameplay reasons, we can’t do too much of that as it would interfere too much.
Ulgrim being able to solo everything outside the Fleshworks is pretty rad, though. Some hero-tier Black Legion that may or may not survive an encounter without the player’s aid would add a lot of flavor too. I think the moderation with how (in)frequently packs of allies are placed in contentious areas (Malmouth, Plains of Strife, Blood Grove, etc.) is done pretty well, but those allies do grow fairly monotonous and blend together despite the ever-changing threats they go up against.
I understand why it is done this way and I agree. But we the players also need to see that the Legion is deserving of their reputation and not just be babysat by us. Hence my suggestion above for how to incorporate the Legion in an active role without diminishing the player’s involvement.
I can think of a few more ways to involve the NPCs without having them interfere. The Aetherials have set up magical interference at point A to protect a stronghold. The Taken will travel to a location near point A, rift in Moira and the spellbreakers and have her team actively dispel the interference while the Taken goes in. While the Taken is inside, the spellbreakers go one step further and remove the source of the interference so the Taken can focus on the boss.
Also, I guess only you devs can answer this but it would be nice to know how the historical figures would fare in the Grim Dawn. It would really suck if I’m wearing the Infernal Knight’s set only to find out he’s a pushover.
Please take note that despite our “heroism” and hax abilities (the freaking rift is broken from a strategic pov, teleport at will), some NPC’s are real powerhouses doing their homework. Anasteria, Creed, Ulgrim and Uroboruuk are all heavy lifters. While it’s true that we are the main force behind things happening in humanity’s favor, it only happens because we have a huge support in the background holding our back. The fact that the black legion coulded keep a steady stream of supplies not only for Fort Ikon but Devil’s Crossin as well means a huge militarized infrastructure able to repel raids and frontal assaults in every point of the route.
Clearly, we are the protagonist, but things being the way they are, the people remaining is quite competent and can hold their ground. Remember that we can’t nemesis the Black Legion, but if Anasteria is that dangerous as a Boss, imagine what kind of Univeral Soldier they could send after us if we ever rub them the wrong way.
