Are there any plans to enable Steam Cloud saves so you can play the same game on different machines in different locations?
They did this with Grim Dawn which also saves to the save path except to /Grim Dawn instead of /Farthest Frontiers. Probably a 1.0 feature.
you can use symlinks and onedrive to work around the lack of steam support right now. itâs what iâm doing
just make sure that your sync is complete before shutting down a machine/starting game on another
Be careful with OneDrive, itâs already caused some problems with saving games.
Easiest is just to back up the local saves onto an external drive like a USB key and the paste it on to another machine to play.
Yes, you said that the last time i brought this up. Notice how iâm putting in the caveats of making sure their sync is complete?
I know youâre trying to be helpful, but i find that youâre being irritating here. Any cloud service can corrupt for files if you try to use them while theyâre syncing.
Love the attitude.
Sorry but the problem with OneDrive is that it attempts to start syncing the moment it detects file changes. This is bad. Even Steam does not attempt to sync files until the game process has fully exited and closed.
it syncs after the write is complete. not during. the file is locked during the write.
Iâve seen enough evidence with Grim Dawn (years of issues), and now Farthest Frontier, as well as having come across anecdotes of issues with other games that I can only say, sorry STRONG PASS on that - and i strongly recommend against others doing so.
Anyone can do as they please but Iâm definitely going to be there to caution against it.
Which Attitude? the one where i politely expressed that i find their behavior obnoxious?
The dude isnât a dev, heâs just a community volunteer moderator. And twice heâs come in to claim something that there is no legitimate evidence for, iâm sure someone got their files corrupted: via user error. The same way any other cloud service can. Which is why I leave caveats. the same caveats as for any service
In general theyâre a very helpful person, but coming in to poop on an idea twice (in two different threads) instead of just reinforcing the caveats for using the idea safely⌠well that i found obnoxious
Anecdotes are not data. Iâm literally a dev on the operating system.
Iâve also been using onedrive for save file sync for tons of games for years. no issues if you follow the caveats you should use for doing this trick with literally any service such as onedrive, google drive, etc
Thatâs the thing about the internet - anyone can claim to be anybody.
But if you are a MS dev then do us all a favor, tell Microsoft to stop letting OneDrive automatically (and by default) interfere in places where numerous games place their save files (and settings files).
I wasnât joking. OneDrives crappy default behavior has caused years of headaches over here for users. And elsewhere.
I work in a different division than OneDrive, but i work much closer to hardware than them and have to know how NTFS behaves better than them.
All you keep saying to me is that you engage in user error. OneDrive doesnât touch ANYWHERE i keep save files, etc unless i explicitly symlink to it. Donât just click âyesâ on every dialog, actually read them.
Again: these same user-error related issues can occur on any system like OneDrive. Google Drive being another example. Wait until your file completes syncing before shutting down your computer, and make sure your file is synced before launching the game.
Steam Cloud is essentially the same thing as the OneDrive/Google Drive symlink trick with one difference: it is aware the application to file relationship, so it blocks the application if you have an incomplete sync. Thatâs it. thatâs the entire difference.
By your limited understanding there is no legitimate evidence for. I donât think your knowledge sums up the entirety of anything.
Why are you taking someone trying to help, not just you but others as well, as obnoxious? Theyâre warning that thereâs still a chance with OneDrive, and offering an alternative. Itâs literally up to anyone reading it to choose. How the hell is that âpoopingâ on the idea?
Try again. OneDrives DEFAULT behavior is to meddle with Documents and all its sub folders. It does this out the gate. Most users have no fucking clue. Ive been having to tell users for years to disable OneDrive as it prevents settings changes from sticking and other random behavior with hijacking their save files.
No, one drives default behavior is to ASK YOU IF YOU WANT TO SYNC THOSE FOLDERS. It explicitly prompts, yes theyâre on by default: uncheck them.
Uncheck them.
this is 100% a PEBKAC issue
PS: Onedrive cannot open a READ handle to the file while another application is holding a WRITE handle.
Most users have no fucking clue.
And this is why the mod is not obnoxious. Even if most users did have a clue most wonât bother and still complain.
Funny. Iâm a chronic OS reinstaller. Its never once asked me if I want it to fuck up my games saves and settings.
Interesting indeed.
Except I literally explained the caveats, thatâs why it is obnoxious.
I always install Pro SKU. Are you installing home? I wonder if it behaves differently between Home and Pro
