I personally prefer the old forumâs layout and would like to have it back if it was a possibility.
I have no idea what is what with the new forums and feel lost and wondering what the need for the new UI even was. GD is after all a PC game, so making it harder to use on PC just for the sake of making it more mobile friendly doesnât make much sense to me, unless we are getting a âGrim Dawn: Immortalâ in the near future.
Maybe I am getting too old for keeping up with the current technology, but felt that old forumâs layout was perfect while this one only looks like a bloated mess to me.
And no, I canât code. Donât expect that of someone who canât even navigate through a forum. So regardless of how customizable Discourse or whatever this is, I canât come up with a better layout.
Doesnât the old layout still exist? It would be great to have an option to revert back to it until all the kinks are worked out of the new one at least.
Iâm using it nearly exclusively on PC atm. Iâm not feeling held back in any way with the new forum. Quite the opposite actually. Youâll find that once you know how things work it gets much easier.
They switched from vBulletin to Discourse, completely different forum software.
You guys may have noticed in the very recent past here Crate was subject to a hack attack. vBulletin was old and no longer updated (plus it displayed like ass on mobile browsers), allowing this hacker to exploit this. You can thank him in part for the change I imagine.
The old forum was on a subdomain. Iâm not sure that had anything to do with the âhackerâ gaining access to the main sites ftp information. Also, the switch from vBulletin to a secure phpbb forum like ppkBB would of been easier, and they could have saved their layout. Discourse isnât the way they should of went in my opinion.
I kind of know myself better than anyone else (for some reason) and I can tell you that I will never end up liking the new layout. Even Blizzardâs I could get used to. But this? not happening.
I am also aware that I have no requirement to continue using the forums and probably wonât do so for much other than maybe the occasional post here and there (which may also be a good thing). But my feedback is basically that the new UI is terrible.
I honestly only use the forum for the compendium build posts and nothing else, so they could have really gone to pad and paper and it wouldnât have made a difference for me as long as those topics exist.
Wider layout with more easily available information. Taking Diablo 3 forums as an example, the forumâs main/home/index page is easier to navigate.
Their layout is also cleaner without the recent threads, suggestions etc popping up at the bottom of the page. Also, there is no infinite scrolling.
On the sub forums, still no infinite scrolling and stickied threads are easily visible and differentiated from non stickied ones. Pages still exist there. Also wider and cleaner layout.
Take a single thread and the same thing. Pages exist, no infinite scrolling, wider and cleaner layout.
I donât mind discourse. But with all due respect to everyone who worked on this forum, I absolutely hate the actual layout/UI.
I agree with the cluttered remark. The UI feels overdesigned, it could be streamlined a fair bit to present larger areas for text, getting rid of/combining some of the menu options, and using the overall space better for a more desktop-friendly look. You can tell this was designed with a vertical screen in mind, and through a widescreen monitor it just looks fucked.
I agree that thereâs too much stuff on the page. For example when viewing the forum sorted by latest posts instead of categories, the (constantly changing) list of online users can probably be removed. It just adds clutter for no clear gain. And the white text on a light grey background for the utility section is barely readable for me, probably completely invisible if youâre color blind in some way.
I wouldnât mind seeing them adjusting it to make better use of space as marked in the screen above. There is a lot of unused real estate there in use only by the slider.
Since D3âs forum was brought up I would like to visually highlight that it is indeed only using as much room for âpostsâ as GDâs currently is. Take a look hereâŚ
Maya just had the âillusionâ that it was wider but this screen makes it clear that they have assigned an inordinate amount of space to showing the users name and pic with no further useful info to justify hogging up that much screen.
Otherwise, as far as the the actual post section it looks roughly the same size, as well the entire âframeâ it utilizes is also the same width thereabouts.
