I’ve had similar sized cities or larger (~500), and haven’t had too much issue, but for some reason this most recent build is hitching every 2 or 3 seconds (freezing completely for 1-2 seconds at a time), making the game nearly unplayable. Changing graphical settings makes no difference to framerate or the hitching issue. Always around 25-40fps, and even dropping resolution way down and unchecking some graphical settings, it still hangs around that same framerate. This is on Idyllic Valley. Didn’t seem to have this issue on other maps. This just an optimization issue?
Hi Jesse,
If you can, upload (either here or email to [email protected]) your .sav and .map and we can see if anything weird is going on that would cause these issues. Also, what are your computer specs? CPU, graphics card, RAM?
Thanks!
Thanks, sent an email with specs, .sav and .map files. Email heading is the same as this topic, to make it easier to find. Hope this helps you guys.
I’m also experiencing this. Setting the game to slower simulation speed improves it. I’m at nearly 1k people and i have to stay at 1x or the stuttering is bad. i just had an attack by almost 250 raiders combined and i had to go to 1/2x because it was stuttering bad (slowing it down improved it).
[educated guess was wrong :)]
Here is my save that reproduces the issue: Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.
Thanks Jesse,
Welp … this is the second case of this bug today:
As soon as I started your saved game, I had a hunch of what the problem was. As the code is now, there are a lot of calculations that happen when a new wall segment is built when there are a lot of other walls in the world. The more walls in the world, the longer the hitch becomes when a new wall segment is created. Your game is a perfect example of that and the hitches correspond to that. Unfortunately, a fix is not ready yet, though it is my top optimization priority once we get past the critical (crash/etc) bugs that we are dealing with.
Thanks and keep an eye out for that optimization.
Wow, quick reply, thanks. I had a feeling it was at least partially to do with walls, because I built them pretty late in that game, and before them it still ran fine. Look forward to future updates. Keep up the great work.
oh then mine is almost certainly also the same bug. i’m building my second layer of wall
which also caused this lovely bug: Villages shouldn't trap themselves between walls when building double walls - #2 by Krufar
Ha. Same, I started building a second layer of walls, and it started grinding to a hault. I also noticed a slight improvement with lower game speed, but not by much. Might keep playing, just get rid of that second wall layer. Didn’t exactly NEED it, just wanted it.
I need it, the armies are big enough now
Just do like me, mine a ton of gold, and build a ridiculous number of towers. Sometimes they never even get to the wall before dying. Towers didn’t seem to impact performance nearly as much as the walls.
Yep, just loaded up your game. Same thing.
At least I now have some good test cases.
Glad to help
Isn’t having repros the best thing ever
I hate when i have to hunt down bugs i can’t reproduce.
Bit off topic, but is the same occurring when you manually move a lot of houses and have many build plots open?
Hmm, sounds unrelated. We can put it on the list of things to look into however.
Hi,
Same problem for me.
Game in unplayable actually, 5 seconds freeze/hitch with walls created or destroyed.
New computer : RTX 3060 TI / I5 11600k, 32 go ram
500 population, my walls are 4 times this (the town is a cross commercial at the center, and industrial + 3 x residential).
I have to build this to counter raiders, may be if we can upgrade walls and gates to 2 x stronger ones, we can reduce 2 x the numbers of walls and it can help on this?
Maybe there’s hope.
Holy walls batman!
Yeah, those walls are excessive. Less wall, more tower.
That’s a huge improvement on the performance.
Stronger walls is an interesting idea. Maybe one tier higher using stone and iron, since I have more iron than I could ever use otherwise. Or maybe brick and iron would be more costly and balanced. Would match the style of the Manor houses and end game buildings, though something like that may be in the works already for a later release.
