Unpathable Terrain - Invalid position

This is one that is like sticking a needle in the eyes. Most of the time when I’m building on an area that is mostly flat and I find this error, by using the flat tool solves the issue 99% of the time. My last game I was about to close the walls for my first 500 citizen, and the walls passed through a starting point of a hill. As usual, used the flat tool and instead of fixing the issue, it changed to invalid position.

I wish Crate would make it more clear as to why or what “Unpathable Terrain” is and suggestions to fix it.

It means the AI cannot path to that location, making it inaccessible. It could be a number of reasons, but it mostly seems to be terrain issues. Try make a new or additional path and see if the new access point helps.

If not, you should probably report it as a bug with screenshots. 0.7.6 will fix the “death cult” glitch but I don’t know if this will impact unpathable terrain or invalid positions.

That is what I do, my point is that as error message it was vague and if it is an error message then should not the problem be automatically report it to Crate? Lastly there is other messages that pop up on screen, I can not right now think of any, and they do not explain what is happening, for example someone can not work.

So let’s get back to the basics so we’re on the same page. Let’s say I’m building a dirty road for example. I usually trace one path, when I want another path heading to another direction I usually start or end over one cell of the previous traced one, or new road will be as a dead end leading nowhere. So here’s a pic I took yesterday.

And this is happening a lot, not only on uneven terrain.

I have one spot right in the centre of my town in what looks like an almost flat place (it is, or rather was, slightly sloping). I couldn’t put a road right on that one tile no matter how hard I tried. I flattened it, and could get a road to go sort of around it, across a diagonal (as luck would have it, I had intended a crossroads to go on this particular spot). The spot itself is still unpathable, even if it looks like it is roaded, and whenever a wagon drives by the spot, it suddenly lurches downwards, as if there is a 2 metre-deep pit there.

Even if the game will not let you build the road, the wagons will get through, road or not… Weird…

There was a post about rectangular buildings potentially causing this type of problem. If you move the buildings that are close to the invalid location (you can move them to the same spot) this could fix the issue.

The flattening tool needs some work. I tried flattening the lower slope of a hill to provide a road and for 4 squares wide beside that, further from the slope, I tried flattening uneven ground for houses. I did this for three game years and what I got was everything elevated instead of depressed. Not what I was looking for. So there is no real control on the outcome.
