When farmland is scattered around, farmers usually need to spend a lot of time walking back and forth in different fields. The time spent on walking is a little too much. This is very bad, because farmland cannot be set in one place, because when the town is large, it is necessary to plant farmland near the town, so that the cellar is also nearby, which is convenient for workers to get food. If the farmland is all in one place, It’s too far for workers in the distance to get food
When people were worried about safety, farmland had to be near a walled secure point - walking distance, which limited how big the village or town could grow. In that respect, the game is historically accurate, but not very satisfying.
One possibility, which would help a bunch of other things as well, would be the ability to start up Satellite Communities - residences with a small market or point to supply the residences that could be set up away from the Town Center to alleviate the Travel Time to farms, mines, and other scattered places on the map. Right now the game has the ‘temporary’ shelters to keep Work Camps going, but they don’t work all that well (they spoil goods much faster than regular Markets and residences do, it seems) and don’t seem to work for any other workers at all.
Of course, to make something like this work the Raiders’ actions would have to be modified a bit: if they tear down or burn down everything they can get to, no un-walled community will survive the first raid and will have to be completely rebuilt after every raid. Perhaps make the raiders steal everything stored, set fire to 1 or 2 buildings, and then get bored and leave, while the workers would still have to run for the walls when a raid is detected. That would give you a major malus to starting up settlements all over the map unless you were playing strictly Pacifist, But allow you to exploit resources like farmland that may be out only on the edge of a Large Map in a late-game High Tier town.
boris has the answer for hayatahina issue but does not need to be added to the game just executed by the player. I already to this. Build walls away from the city center. Construct whatever you choose within those walls and eventually connect with the main city portion.
I’ve done this, too, but it doesn’t solve another issue with Distant Settlements, which is transferring anything produced there back to the ‘main’ Village/Town. There is no way to direct goods to be transferred from one Storage site to another, so any food produced in an isolated settlement will likely stay there until it rots, instead of being sent back to be consumed by the bulk of the population.
