Just wanted to say that this is NOT what Grim is about, this is a game for anyone and everyone, and hate is not welcome here. I have met SO many wonderful and big-hearted people through this game, and I have no tolerance for intolerance. Now more than ever we need to connect on what brings us together, so it was especially disheartening to see this type of rhetoric invade my favorite game. Don’t know if there is much that can be done, but at least wanted to bring this to the community’s attention. Grim deserves better, we all deserve better!
I think those kind of people can be anywhere,
and they are very likely still young, they have a long way of learning about respect.
Grim Dawn isn’t as much infested with them tbh compared to COD.
Let me tell you something about Trolling and this sort of bait, and make no mistake you just fallen for one, if you take this to heart you loose, if you message this person or post this he wins
you just gave him more exposure then he would have ever gotten otherwise.
Yeah that’s definitely not classy or cool, and probably downright racist. Though what does Crate have to do with this? And like someone else mentioned; you just gave them more exposure than they ever could have hoped for otherwise. On a sidenote, I’d rather deal with people like this than that quack who claimed the numbers on redeemer armor were related to Nazism.
In most locations (no idea where Crate is tho), the hosting company has a responsibility to tackle this sort of issue once they’ve been reported. If Crate either hosts or controls the hosting of this data, then they do have an obligation to moderate it.
Wow some people take themselves too seriously…Well yeah it’s bad no one is denying it obviously…
No it’s not about that; it’s just that whoever did it is likely an immature, attention seeking youngish person just trying to be edgy.
And how do we know said person wasn’t black, which therefore doesn’t make them racist? I’ve met plenty of blacks and they definitely use the nig-word a lot. So idk
I hope you realize that downplaying this racist behavior normalizes it. Even if this an “attention seeking youngish person” (could be a full-blown nazi white supremacist for all we know), they should be dealt with. At the very least be called out for it.
Buddy, I’m blue collar. It’s already normal where I work; from black guys too. So IDK, seems normal to me. YMMV.
Ok maybe (seems unlikely), but tbh if this their mark on the world so what? Not justifying it ofc; but it’s pretty damn inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. I’ve said my piece, I don’t wanna start a war and this board isn’t about discussing racism, real or perceived. Let Crate deal with it, now that they were informed.
While I agree with the rest of what you said, how exactly do you intend to call out an anonymized user of a cross-platform matchmaking system?
While I don’t think it should be necessarily high up on Crate’s priority list, I do think it’s worth implementing a word filter/censor for the server browser. One can only hope that, if they do, they use a more intelligent censor than the one FromSoftware uses, which infamously censors the word ‘Knight’ - rather infuriating, given the games they make.
I don’t think that tinkering with censorship is a priority now or later. Maybe it’s a nice thing to have but there are so many “bad” words in many different languages and religions.
That’s what I like tho, while not correct… the freedom is insane when it comes to doing anything with the game.
I’m going to admit: I saw this thread a few days ago and people wouldn’t treat this as a “VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE,” but people just can’t stop posting.
An extremely personal pet peeve of mine is the pervasive misuse and overuse of the word “community,” as if an internet playerbase that virtually spans the entire globe can somehow be comparable to a town of people who have lived and been raised with each other for years. In a small town, a group of miscreants who pull this nonsense would be hearing knocks from friends and family of the affected individuals who would clearly communicate in no uncertain terms that this language will not be tolerated.
In a global setting where gamers routinely use VPNs to hide their physical location and could be located in a culture whose rules about language are wildly different from those you’ve grown up in (or of course these people can be complete trolls who are aware of the rules and simply don’t give a posterior)? Yeah, it’s not easy to locate the people responsible for using loathed words behind a keyboard screen, and such methods absolutely should not be simple to employ; after all, why stop at race-related words when you can dox people for their sex / location / affiliations / other deeply personal information?
As much as I’d love for massive gaming companies to admit that global servers are a mistake and revert back to local LAN-based or other small-group matchmaking servers where an online troll halfway around the world can no longer have the means to attempt to steal my personal identity and all sorts of other cybercrimes for using an “non-allowed word,” I will instead focus on practical solutions that a small company such as Crate can focus on:
As Ceno above mentioned, apply word filters on a sever-level. Obviously, trolls who don’t give a **** about civility are cunning enough to understand how to convey the same sort of vitriol and hatred while getting around the specific censors, so it becomes a cat-and-mouse game where the censors react to the trolls.
Create a full surveillance state similar to the OP where cameras are on 24/7 to screenshot people attempt to use this language that would require massive amounts of bandwidth to ensure that nothing slips under the cracks. After all, I’m sure this language has been used in these servers in prior years (not because anything to do with Crate, but simple human nature and the nature of trolls) - why are people chirping about it now? This is clearly on the wrong end of the “applying 80% of available resources to weed out the 1-2% of trolls who aren’t going to change their ways because a random person on the internet is calling them out for it” spectrum.
Something that can weed out 80% of the miscreants with a low amount of resources is obviously best, but that leads to the question, “so what?” You think people will change their behavior because a video game complany won’t allow them to play their game?
There is also a non-zero chance that people deliberately break common conventions to demonstrate “oh look! I can break into your servers to do this! Hire me and let me impose my demands on you (whether the demands are benign or draconian it doesn’t matter) or else I’ll make it worse for everyone!” It has been done on a grander scale before (see: gold duping exploits in any MMO). I won’t give a fraction because I know how low people will stoop to get emotional reactions out of people, but it is non-zero.
They’ll find a way to break the rules anyway and continue their behavior. I think it would be pointless to do something like this; there will always be stupid people.
It’s better to turn the page and forget about them.
I think this is well put, and I’m inclined to agree about the zeitgeist around video game “communities”. Frankly I don’t think there’s a lot of substance behind people or corporations calling out things that are convenient, easy wins, especially online. It’s a whole lot more difficult and less popular to let your work speak for itself and treat the players like the adults they are.
95% of the reason I play this game and a few other offline/local ARPGs is because my friends and I can do virtually whatever we want with our save files, mods, the game installation, and yes, servers. I’m not gonna sit here and die on the hill of defending some guy’s right to put the n-word in his server name, but I’m perfectly capable of deciding for myself that I probably won’t get along real well with that guy, and accepting that a few edgy dorks will inevitably buy the game whenever there’s a Steam sale.
I’m not sure Crate could do much other than applying some sort of chat/server filter/censor anyway. As far as I know it’s p2p, which is ultimately a good thing for this sort of game.
The base assumption of course is that the creator of it is not African American.
Much like people that post ‘callout’ threads in other places without finding out any context whatsoever, that will have absolutely zero impact on the individual that created the problem.
How about instead just jump on the person’s server and call them racist and see how you can help them improve from there.
isnt’ that “literally” just giving them the exact attention they might want?/“troll won”
and if it is a genuine racist too you probably wont change their mind in a GD session chat conversation, if it’s a troll they might even enjoy the opportunity to rile up additionally ?
