Technically, willow is a quite large tree.
For baskets, I assume the correct term would probably be Straw?

Willows are classified as shrubs or trees, depending on the sub-species.
Also willow baskets are absolutely a thing.
Not all willows are trees, some are bushes
Right, I just know of the big ones, lol.
Baskets are also made from birch, oak, ash and hickory as well. So, you could make baskets without having a willow?
" Examples include pine, straw, willow, oak, wisteria, forsythia, vines, stems, animal hair, hide, grasses, thread, and fine wooden splints."
So yeah, perhaps they could add other materials
They should rename it as pollard willow, this one has the best branches to make baskets.
I am pretty sure these frontier villagers does not care where they get their best branches, as long as they get good enough branches to make baskets
Wicker is the plant par excellence for basketry. Wicker is the name given to the releases of the year from several species of willows (about six).
But a pollard willow is a willow tree kept cut to size for easy harvesting. Not sure the ingame representation fits for that.
Oh and wicker is not a plant, but a technique. A wicker basket could be made out of reed (as it was originally in Egypt) or synthetic fibers, or rattan (a catch-all for palm trees used), not just willow.
Basketry is the technique.
Wickers are the young shoots of the year of willows.
Well then you should tell that to wikipedia…
Basketry is the making of baskets, whether by weaving or other ways like sewing. Coiled basketry is made from pine needles or grasses, twining from roots or bark etc.
To my knowledge, the young shoots of willow are called whips, not “wickers”. Maybe you’re translating from another language?
Edit: I just noticed someone already linked the wikipedia article to basketry. See there for more information.
According to several English dictionaries :
Whip → a piece of leather or rope that is fastened to a stick, used for hitting animals or people
Wicker → a slender, pliant twig; osier
Guys, come on… sometimes it is nice that you actually need to use the trader post to get the resources or goods you require. You cant have all resources on all maps and just be fully self sufficient XD

Correct. In real life you don’t find everything in front of you’re door.
It’s just weird to find everything on the map.
And you can weave rushes for baskets
Try playing on a seed where the 7th digit is 5. You will not find “everything”
I can’t find willow, clay and medical roots on my map and herbs are rare.
But their are more gold deposits than people and animals together on the map.
