[1.3.0.8] Cold DW Werewolf — Fenris RoS Reaver

Status: Theorycraft, not yet endgame-tested. Posting the concept for feedback before I sink in the playtime. Gentle constructive criticism very welcome.

GrimTools: Reaver, Level 100 (GD 1.3.0.0) - Grim Dawn Build Calculator

The concept

A pure cold melee Werewolf Reaver (Berserker/Nightblade) built around the Fenris set. Feral Claws + Rip and Tear as the wolf engine, Ring of Steel as the AoE payoff, Night’s Chill + Murmur + Elemental Storm for cold RR + Bonechilling cry. No pets, no untransformed Onslaught — just a tanky wolf that stands on bosses and rushes packs.

Where it sits vs the existing cold builds

Two cold Berserker builds are already out there, and this aims squarely at the gap between them:

  • The Ice King (Werewolf/Hellhound pet hybrid, Ice King’s Adornments) — cold Werewolf, but pet-focused.
  • Korba Reaver (Onslaught/RoS, untransformed) — cold RoS, but not a wolf, and famously skill-point starved.

This is the middle ground nobody seems to have posted yet: a pure melee cold Werewolf with RoS, no pets.

Why the wolf form is the whole point

Fenris converts 100% Pierce AND 100% Physical to Cold on Werewolf, plus +220% Cold / +220% Frostburn on the form. Feral Claws even gets flat cold baked in.

The key structural advantage over the Korba Reaver: in wolf form, Onslaught and all WPS are disabled. That sounds like a loss, but it’s exactly what fixes the Korba Reaver’s biggest complaint — point starvation. Because I’m not funding Onslaught + WPS + RoS all at once, every point goes into the form, RoS, Night’s Chill and defense. RoS still fires while transformed, so it stays the AoE centerpiece.

Night’s Chill is a natural fit here — it reduces Cold and Pierce resistance, and as an aura it never interrupts attacks. Exclusive is Heart of Asterkarn (+135% cold/frostburn + OA).

Playstyle

Leap in → Ring of Steel to detonate the pack → Feral Claws filler (leech + devotion procs) → Rip and Tear on cooldown → warcries / Pneumatic Burst for survival. Stand on bosses, rush between packs.

Open questions — where I’d love input

  1. Relic: I went Serenity for survival over Amatok’s Grip but it might be a real damage gain. Serenity vs Amatok’s Grip — which wins here?
  2. Single-target: how does a cold Fenris wolf’s boss DPS realistically compare to the Korba Reaver’s stacked RoS dump? Is the tankier wolf giving up too much ceiling?
  3. Bloodfrenzy: I kept points in it purely for the attack speed but is there a better home for those points?
  4. Anything obvious I’m missing on the cold RR chain or the point layout?

Thanks for reading — this is largely my own first build and I’d really appreciate any thoughts.

Big thanks to the two threads I drew inspiration from — go check them out, they’re great

You miss all the good stuff from Nightblade like the flats from Dual Blades (flat damage is king on dual wield setups because this aplies to both weapons ) , Shadow dance , Nightblade bottom passives worth one pointers at least . Nightblade is left quite butchered in the expense of some questionable overcaps with hard dimishing returns.

Thanks a lot, that’s exactly the kind of feedback I was after. The Dual Blades point really landed — I’d underrated how much the flat matters on a DW setup where it applies to both weapons, and post-Fenris that flat is all cold anyway, so it was basically free scaling I was leaving on the table.

Reworked it: pulled points out of the overcaps and fed them back into Dual Blades, Shadow Dance and the bottom Nightblade passives as one-pointers. The Nightblade side is a lot healthier now — updated the GrimTools in the OP.

Is there a specific overcap you’d still trim first?

I’ve been trying Alkamos rings on a setup without RoS to pump some attack speed. Build gets about 20-30 attack speed increase OVER the regular cap, so being stuck at 160 is kinda sad. Didn’t try it against anything heavy yet.

Edit: Replace Cronley’s with Covenant of Siff rings.
Its 2026 not 2016 lol

Much more AS% and an aggressive Devo layout. Double Cronley rings or with one Deathguard. You really need CC-Res from your greens.

  1. Amatok’s Grip over Serenity/Aurora as Relic for its nice AS% trigger we really need (Ghoul acts as a circuit breaker and should be enough). You can take either, personal taste!
  2. No clue, dont think they are much apart
  3. Its fine as a last points dump
  4. Diminishing points in skills (11/12 Anatomy of Murder 8/12 Untamed Rage). I like to stop at those, though Untamed Rage is debateable if you wanna squeeze more “%dmg red” out and have spare points.

3684 / 3143 OA/DA Makes your crits much more likely and they gain higher multipliers

Just try to kill everything before it kills you, piloting is key for nightblades!

Thanks a lot for taking the time to rework the whole thing — and thanks to @Serafim_94 as well for the earlier feedback, both of you gave me more in two posts than I got out of my own theorycrafting.

Your version is way better and It fits what a nightblade is supposed to do anyway: burst everything down before it gets a chance to answer.

Well, that’s a lot of farming ahead of me now!

That’s insane, thanks for sharing

I’d appreciate some honest feedback on my bad boi, brothers. I think there is some room for improvement, especially regarding the devotions…Of course, I might add that my playstyle is minimalistic when it comes down to press a lot of buttons - simple is the way to go: less buttons, more fun, relaxin’ :stuck_out_tongue:

Update: some SR feedback

Updated GrimTools: Reaver, Level 100 (GD 1.3.0.8) - Grim Dawn Build Calculator
This is @Nola’s reworked version, not my original layout — it was better built than what I came up with. Note also that I swapped Chillheart to Korba’s Fury because of the spirit requirement.

SR 30-31 Ultimate — relative ease but slow

  • Runs landed around 8m30, with almost no variance between them
  • Not pushing deeper for now — at 30-31 I’m already getting two-shot in trash, so 36 isn’t realistic in this state

What the runs actually showed

In the OP I described this as “a tanky wolf that stands on bosses and rushes packs”. That was wrong on the first half. It plays as a hit-and-run character: dash in, burst, dash out, repeat. Sit in a trash pack and I get two-shot.

@Nola called it in advance — piloting is key, kill it before it kills you. That’s the whole principle of this layout, and I underestimated how literally it was meant. It isn’t a tuning detail, it’s the build’s identity.

Up front: a good part of what follows is almost certainly on me. This is my first build of this kind and I’m sure I’m missing things — bad positioning, mistimed cooldowns, engaging packs I should be pulling apart first. I’d rather say that than blame the setup for my own mistakes.

One on one it’s a completely different character. I stay on target, the leech keeps pace with incoming damage, and the fight ends fast — the Ravager kill in the video @roshansoma posted above is the clean demonstration of that ceiling. In SR it means the boss room takes almost no time and pulls the run back after a slower trash phase.

Where the principle breaks down

Kill it before it kills you works exactly as advertised in single target. Where it breaks is dense trash: my damage spreads across several targets instead of concentrating, the pack doesn’t die fast enough, so I’m forced to disengage — and disengaging is precisely when my leech stops, since ADCtH is the whole defensive layer. It’s a self-reinforcing loop, and it’s why trash costs me far more than bosses do.

Is that a Ring of Steel output problem, a piloting problem, or just the accepted cost of the aggressive layout?

Thanks for sharing! One thing I noticed — no Pneumatic Burst?

I know you want minimal buttons, but doesn’t it feel missing when you need a heal or some survivability outside of hitting something?

Sorry for taking so long to reply, brother. It’s been a long time since I have played that char - I shall do so later today, and I’m considering putting some points into Pneumatic Burst, for Ascendant mode purposes…I’m afraid I may start to miss Pneumatic Burst at some point there.

Whats up guys, i arrived late to the party but i’ve been playing Cold RoS WULF since the first week of the expansion so I thought, why not share it here:

That’s what i got , not sure why Grimtools is so incosistent with stats for this one specially %DMG but in game i’m reaching 4000% cold damage with relic proc, 212% atk speed with Elixir of the Hunt and 232% with amatok’s proc, i tried to push as hard as possible with OA+Crit dmg so both agressive rings of landslides, cunning dump etc, 4400 OA baseline in game plus -244 DA from hardcapped bonechilling cry, basically red crits all over the place… before the form of the beast “nerf” i menaged to hit 4M with RoS inside the Shattered realm, now it’s kinda more balanced , feral claws dmg is more consistent specially with the Ascended bonus WD and Ring of steel still very potent i’d say Chillheart is BIS here, i got crit damage everywhere on devotions for that matter. Also dont sleep on new Kurn augments, amatok’s feast is pretty insane value.

Hope this helps guys, feel free to ask anything.

btw, i stream on twitch every day if you wanna join  /Reinan22

Cheers.
