Acid Shadow Strike Reaper Beginner Guide and Endgame build 1.2.1.6

Hello, I’m a complete beginner and this is the first guide I’ve read and the first character I’ve created. I went HC even though you didn’t recommend it. I have a few questions:

What are the core(BIS) items for the build? I’m guessing the weapons, helmet and medal (maybe the relic too)? I know you only considered guaranteed items when making the guide, but inevitably I end up dropping epic items and some legendaries that sometimes even seem better for the build, but I’m afraid of going off-track and breaking some very important synergy. I’d really appreciate it, and I think it would improve future guides as well, if you pointed out which items are core to the build.

Right now I’m level 57 in Ugdenbog. I’m exploring every corner of the map, so I’m probably overleveled compared to you. My question is: why, around this level range (50–60), were you leveling the Nightblade tree instead of Necromancer to get Harbinger of Souls? It seems more important because of the synergy with the medal. Is Blade Spirit really that OP/good?

Likewise, why shouldn’t I go for Affliction after getting Chariot? It’s already unlocked and gives me an active skill for leveling. Are any of the devotions listed between it and Chariot very important?

Here is my character at the moment so you can better understand my questions:

I think those are my questions for now. Thank you very much for the excellent guide  .

I will try to answer in a proper order:

  • core items are both weapons ( global cold to acid conversion very important ) , medal since good synergy and not much acid medals anyways and I like to use 1 to Nightblade crafting belt ( not gargoyle that converts vitality to cold )
  • I go for guaranteed items as last resort , if you found something without messing your conversion or cut it , use it ( I don’t like to include random drops or do honourable mentions cause I don’t know how this items will perform )
  • I go for Nightblade cause mastery bar offers better stats and Execution deletes enemies thanks to the massive weapon damage multiplier ( Blade spirits are just nice bonus and devotion procer )
  • I skip Affliction even being unlocked cause Reaper is very squishy class( Affliction is pure damage devotion) and this bracket usually I move to higher difficulty or I am at Forgotten gods ( tons of scary enemies and shotgun mechanics ) so I focus more on sustain and utility . General rule when leveling in Grim Dawn is feeling your build - if you delete enemies then is time to work on sustain , if you sustain pretty well but your clear speed is slow you go for damage ( if you lack both then something is really messed up in your setup )

Good suggestion on the core items , I will deffinatelly focus more on that for the future projects , If you have more questions feel free to ask , thanks for the feedback and good luck on your HC journey

Hey Snoomak! thanks for the excellent guide, I have been having a blast with it. I am at lvl 100 now farming and came across an issue - Valdaran showed up and handed my arse to me. I have never had a problem with him at max lvl, so I was wondering if any of you build maestros could look at my GT and see where I have missed . TIA

He destroys every auto attacker , you have to watch for his buff ,on top of his head a electrified skull cloud will appear than he start retaliate with lightning nova for every attack , you have to kite the buff and not attack at all

I have tested several Deathguard setups in 1.3, including the ones that had ABB.

I think I liked the one that I made the most:

Checks all the boxes, extremely resilient punchy.

Caveat: you need Witch Hunter’s prefix on Plagius medal. Fortunately, it’s among the most the second tier of prefixes in order of popularity.

yay, no Call of the Grave or pesky Omen cast either

I think you can actually one point CotG for that 9% crit but won’t make a difference. Not having to worry about an extra buff button might outweigh this miniscule temp buff.

i legit dont’ remember which version it was, but earlier in 1.2’s deathguard cycle i recall one with “high” points CotG (roman/nofika?) and i always dislike pressing that buff/never include it in my own builds, not even for pets

I assume your rolls are a bit better than Grimtools so you have more than 78% elemental resists, but even then it seems you have no overcap at all. Is that really safe?

I’m also wondering about the Marks of Dreeg in the weapons. Wouldn’t 1 suffice, with a Gallstone to add more % damage? Or is the extra proc chance worth it?

It’s probably grim tools from a boss fight ,that’s why low on elemental

It’s a 1.3 build. In 1.3 Irrah’s Venomtongue got 15% elemental resist!

I’ve tested it and double Marks performed better. Proc is too good. This build is basically one big rapidly moving aoe damage cloud with how many procs and dot it has (and single target damage is supreme as well).

Ah, I’d forgotten about the acid augment buffs in 1.3. That explains, thanks!

I was going to try out a Deathguard reaper instead of my current DEE reaper (who is strong, but… boring.) but I guess I’ll wait until 1.3 comes out.

Thank y’all

Hello.

I was wondering why do we need that high Spirit ? In endgame version there is 0 points spent in Spirit, and almost ALL into cunning to stack high OA.

BTW: Great build, im having a blast so far, almost lvl 100, found 3 pieces of Deathguard and none Daega’s… thats RNG

Endgame version sustain energy better and better stats rolls but you can shift it if you have good items , attributes are something tight to the run and preference , for example I don’t like pressing energy pot on high reactive builds . Spirit here is subject to change so feel free to decrease the values

So, Spirit is pretty much only to up our energy regen, got u. Im already at 97lvl with like 3.1k OA and 2.7k DA (with PB active) with still leveling gear + some legendaries. Only problem right know is 16-17k life but i might pump some from spirit to physique or cunning if im comfy with energy regen (right know with like 40 into spirit my energy never goes down pretty much).

My character look like this currently : Reaper, Level 97 (GD 1.2.1.6) - Grim Dawn Build Calculator

Thanks for fast answer.
Cheers!
