Game deals

Let me tell you about unlucky  53 achievements completed legit… total games won = 1, and wait for it… Nimbus! which I already had…

16 coupons… none that really stand out in my mind…and 41 pieces of coal… then when I decided to try and see if I could win something through crafting, I was past the time when Valve ran out of coupons / games from other companies, so I spent 14 coal to get two more Valve coupons… both worth less than the one I already had…

Still, I had fun, but I am pissed off (well, probably more surprised and disappointed…) by all the cheaters that existed in this contest, and I do hope that Valve punishes them with permanent bans of their accounts. Although then I wonder what happens to all the things they won unfairly… does it just disappear forever, or go back into some sort of draw? Who knows… Oh well, until the next big sale / contest…

there was cheaters? :open_mouth: how lol

and yeah, seeing what void won i’m a little dissapointed in my wins… but then again… those are purely gifts from valve so i cant really complain

There was some sort of achievement unlocker app that just gave free achievements thus giving you free coals (and games/rewards)

I’m not sure of exactly how, but from what I can gather reading the forums, there are people who made in excess of 300+ accounts, specifically for farming achievements. There were also people who exploited the Humble Indie Bundle 4, dropping the amount they were making by almost 50% in a single day, and then using the games from the bundle to get an advantage in the Great Gift Pile on Steam and forcing the guys behind the Humble Bundle to put a minimum price in place. Void can probably fill in more details, since he helped me catch up on what was happening, but it appears Valve is actually taking steps to do something about the cheaters… good for them!

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I forgot the exploit Asylum just mentioned - I think it is Steam Achievement Manager…

Well, cheating comes with a risk. Luckily.

I’ve had 11 achievements, got a bunch of coals and a few not so very useful coupons…

You guys have pretty much covered all the bases and their isn’t much to add.

The amount of outright cheating and exploiting of indies and charity was disgusting. Thankfully Valve have swooped in, closed accounts and taken ill gotten gains back from those who raped the system.

I got 37 achievements and won 4 games. People have been saying the chance to win a game was 25% but I don’t know anyone that had a 25% win rate. I have a 9.25% win rate and that seems quite high compared to others than I know, most of them averaging around 40 achievements and winning 2 games, so I would say the actual probability of winning a game was 5% and the chance of winning something of value was significantly smaller.

Wasn’t that for getting a coupon? I think the rules said so, but I might be remembering wrong.

Shrugs I’m just repeating numbers that have been tossed around on the Steam forums. I honestly have no idea.

I guess it is gone now, but in the conditions of the Winter sale, there was a 1 in 4 chance of winning something from the great gift pile. Otherwise, coal would be awarded. I would hazard a guess and say that the great gift pile was both games and coupons. I got 2 games, 9 coupons, and 25 coal, so by that reasoning, it does work.

I bought Dungeons of Dredmor and Deus Ex HR for ~ $21.

I dont know if Dredmor will turn out to be a favorite but I really wanted to see what it was like. Too bad the wand skills (spells) seem to have been taken out. (Content is most important but the interface seems a bit fiddy – it has been out for awhile) .

Deus Ex seemed took good a deal to pass on – something for after Skyrim.

I was thinking about SS SE HD but it wouldnt have been new for me – still only a couple of bucks. Maybe sometime later.

I don’t know if anyone cares anymore, but GreenmanGaming is having a New Year’s sale over the next two weeks… Dead Island is on for $15 - $10 cheaper than the Steam price a couple of days ago… A lot of their games activate on Steam as well…

Sale and wallet fatigue.

This is a bad time of year to be anyone but Steam.

Nice…War in the North is $15 there too…I know someone was asking about that game earlier so might be the right price to pick it up :stuck_out_tongue:

I got Dungeons of Dredmor a week ago, I absolutely love it, for $4 its extreme value, and even at full price of $8, I actually bought 4 extra copies for friends. If you like Roguelike’s and are a fan of Muchkin the card game, this game was MADE for you lol, it has some good humor in there, but overall its a fantastic game, Im hoping it gets more and more polished over time. My opinion is biased though because Rogue is my favorite game of all time

Greenman has Warhammer space marine for 7.49 GBP

Apparantly the Humble Indie inspired others?

The Indie Royale bundle features four games for less than 4 bucks;

  • Nuclear Dawn
  • Fractal
  • Max & the Magic Marker
  • Super Crossfire

I think I am going through after xmas steam sales withdrawal…but the Dead Space 1/2 sale for this weekend enabled me to scratch that itch again.

Dunno when I will play all these games, but I miss the daily sales.

Still trying to finish mass effect 1 so I can start 2. Not even really sure I want to carry over my toon as I really have no clue what to do at each level up and my companions are maxed in the bio/tech but spend 90% of their time dead.

Also, something called Nation Red is free on steam this weekend. With a controller it is almost Robotron action, but there is something borked about the controls.

You can choose to respec your guy when you import him into mass2, even some of the major decisions. It’s done via a dialogue early in the game where people ask you about your past, and you’re free to answer whatever you’d like.

Aaaand… Titan Quest again for 2.50 on Steam. Seriously, if you haven’t gotten it for some reason, get it now.

Is From Dust worth it for 5 bucks btw? Is it anything like Populous 3? Or way too slow? There seems to be quite a big discrepancy between the critic score and the userscore for this game on Metacritic, the latter being more reliable (and lower).

well… i played from dust…

its really a love or hate it… its not at all long, not hard, nor are the challenges hard…

i played the 10h through and never toutched it again…
its a dissapointment from what i was expecting… Have a look at my review of the game

Then i guess you’d be more informed to make a decision!
