Game deals

I played it for a bit, it’s nothing like Red Faction, aside from the fact most of it takes place underground. It’s more like Stalker. It seems like a good game, but ehhh there’s something about it that feels hollow… The characters you interact with seem lively and the story is interesting (post apocalyptic world, always cool)

(IMO if anything is “like” red faction, it needs tons of destructible environments, which Metro has none of iirc)

Myeah, Red Faction is all about destroying  Didn’t like that game as much as I thought I would.

I don’t care about the best of the best gfx and I didn’t like Stalker either, so I guess I can safely skip this one.

I liked Stalker… there were some awesome mods out for it to make it into a more realistic survival shooter. I’ve got Stalker: Call of Pripyat that I want to get into… ahh need more time!

There was a big sale earlier… I mentioned this about metro…(and in comparison to STALKER SoC) If you approached it right, it was great. Some people like CoP. I dont recommend Cleay Sky before the other two.

Metro – More modern graphically and the guns were easier to deal with but it had less grab for me. The story has some WTF-doesnt-matter-keep-going stuff kind of like Cryostasis but not so bad, as it made some sense. The only real problem with it, in my opinion, are the melee monsters. Up close, graphically, it can look like a mess at times. Control-wise, melee can be clumsy and the monsters seem to be able to pass right next to you or behind, and your FOV isnt very wide. Fortunately, there are only a few times where it’s hard to keep them out of melee range. There are some interesting setups and in the way I played it, it was kind of like a stealth game when facing human opponents – you can take damage quickly – yet you are able to prevail.

If you dont want the atmosphere or story, one of the high-rated current military shooters will probably have better action – I dont know I havent bought one – most have short singleplayer campaigns.

I also felt the script and path through the environment had a more apparent/obvious feel to it (even when you didnt know where to go).

I have a copy of Red Faction Guerilla from when I bought it. From reading the reviews, it looked like it could be worth a few laughs but not something I would find really interesting. I havent tried it yet. I heard some people liked the multiplayer and I thought it might have bot support support so maybe I’ll try that out sometime.

The multiplayer of RFG WAS great. I loved it, but it took FOREVER for the matchmaking to find matches, and it doesn’t support bots at all!!! I don’t think anyone plays online anymore so you’re pretty much SOL.

I saw that Torchlight PC is $10 at http://www.torchlightgame.com to Fri 8am PST.

Tons of things on sale today on Steam - Frontlines: Fuel of War is the THQ special @ $2.99, and they have also started their Halloween sale which has about 25 games or so in it all 50%-%75 off… as well, the weekend special is Stalker + Call of Priyapt for $9.99.

I’m particularly interested in hearing opinions on some of the following so I can get them if they seem worthwhile before time runs out…
Frontlines
The Overlord bundle (Overlord, Raising Hell, & Overlord II)
Stalker
Zombie Driver
Dead Space

Any opinions anyone? And if there are any others in the sales that are must-haves, please let us know about it!

Overlords is fun, although it’s pretty repetitive. You control a bunch of crazed Gremlin-like creatures and complete missions by puzzling which minions you have to send (some can walk on water, some are heat resistant, some poison and than there’s the stronger (and funnier) brown ones). I never really liked the (simplistic) puzzle aspect, but the minions are pretty fun when they’re ravaging the landscape.

I do think it’s worth it, but you gotta appreciate Gremlin humor.

Stalker: not worth it  But that’s me. A lot of people swear by it. I found it dull and uninteresting.

Zombie Driver: fun for a short while, gets repetitive rather fast. You might as well download the demo and play that a few times, you won’t miss out much.

Dead Space; really slow, bulking horror shooter. It wasn’t scary imho and the slow movement was really bothering me. I never finished it, but still intend to once. It wasn’t really bad, but nothing special either.

Plants vs Zombies is a must have. Best tower defence game by a longshot.

EDIT; I’m slightly interested in Burn Zombie Burn! Any opinions on that?

I’m hoping they put the original Dawn of War (not II) on sale, or all DoW games on sale before the end of this. I already own the entire THQ pack from Metro back, but my son has been asking to get a copy of the complete DoW collection for his Steam account.

Other than that, didn’t see anything that caught my eye for the Halloween sale. Too busy with Fallout and Two Worlds II will be at my door in a few weeks (barring a delay on the European import I’ve ordered).

I think “resident evil 4 in space” as someone put it was pretty fitting. The controls are a lot better (considering how in RE4 you can’t strafe or shoot while moving) and it’s more action with spooks than survival horror.

I loved RE4 (played it on the Wii), but honestly, I don’t think they’re much alike. Perhaps because I expect the Wii to be a bit bothersome, but Deadspace was nothing like that. Slow turning, slow moving, it drove me crazy. I thought the game was bugged or something, till I found it it was part of mechanics to make the player more scared…

I fully recommend trying stalker if you like environments and mood.

You have to learn to use the guns and cover effectively – this is not your typical american run while gun game. It also isnt a sandbox game such as Oblivion. Hopefully, these two items of information will prevent you from concluding that the game is too hard or not fun.

If you approach it right and if it is whithin you interest, it’s great.

YES!! RE4 for the Wii was AWESOME.
I loved it on the Wii…I was really sad when they didn’t make RE5 for the Wii…I was never a fan of the slow clunky controls in the RE series…on the Wii it just felt so right to me.
B

I played RE4 on the GC. With a little practice, it was fair enough.

The videos of Dead Space looked like it was a little too slow for me to take.

I also have to say that RE4’s artwork really made the difference and the enemies were pretty wild.

Same here, with the raving reviews it got and everyone so positive I had really hoped they’d port it eventually, but alas…

Is RE5 for the PC any good btw? It’s also on offer

Are any of the Steam Halloween sale items worthwhile? I already have Ghost Master.

How are Nation Red, and Burn Zombie Burn?

I thought I tried the Nation Red demo once and thought the arenas were a bit small and I didnt like having to stay in the middle.

Limbo is more of an experience but it might be a good choice for Halloween. I dont know if it is on sale but it isnt that expensive.

Its replayability is like a movie – you probably wont play it again immediately even if you like it.

Today’s the Dawn of War Gold edition on offer for €15,-. Nice deal, imo.

I purchased Burn Zombie Burn!, I still gotta try it.
