Grim Misadventure #188 - A Look Back at 2024...'s Work on New Potions!

You can’t demand anything from grimtools, since it is outside the developers.

We don’t need seasons. It’s not even a workable idea with Crate’s current staff. I think it would take them at least a year before they could ramp up to do this. And then what? Grim Dawn becomes some version of Path of Exile? No thanks.

no please, I personally hate season things in games especially arpg’s.

They can’t, since those are different expansions.

Or, to be more precise, the “coolness” factor wouldn’t overcome the extra coding effort and the potential confusion for new customers (buy GD + Fangs, like the game, buy the other expansions, and your potion brewer is gone ? etc…).

I’m also not particularly in favor of this idea of seasons, if everyone realizes this latest expansion will come with a ton of new things, I think that after here it will be time to think about producing the second version of grim dawn.

Some people would be happy to have seasons. Personally I would not play them but I can understand.

Just to nitpick about the example you chose: Path of Exile doesn’t have exclusivity on seasons. The concept has existed since at least Diablo 2. It’s not seasons that differentiate GD from POE.

Adding a cauldron to the Coven of Ugdenbog is kind of a no-brainer given that it’s thematic. I suspect Kurnhold will become the hub of choice for most players in FoA though.

by that hinting stash + merchants/craft NPCs are close to portals like in Steelcap? :yum:

I’m really excited for the new expansion and I  what Crate’s been doing with the game so far. However, I have to admit that I’m not looking forward to this new pot customization feature, especially because of the extra piano it introduces.

This has been said here before, but once pots become 30-second long buffs, then every build will naturally want them up permanently to max out their power/survivability. And the argument of “it’s just once per 30 seconds” doesn’t really fly, because of the large amount of short duration buffs that already exist.

Example; “any” Deceiver build worth its salt must:

  • Cast Blood of Dreeg every 60 seconds because you want the buffs always up.
  • Cast Word of Renewal every 60 seconds for buffs too
  • Cast Inquisitor Seal every 24 seconds for the damage absorb
  • Cast Horn of Gandarr every 5 secs for enemy damage reduction
  • Consume health potion every 30 seconds to keep the buffs up
  • Consume mana potion every 30 seconds to keep the buffs up
And this doesn’t include the extra inputs needed for frequent dodging, movement runes, nor offensive skills (you might want Word of Pain and Curse of Frailty up all the time too…)

There’s a big difference in demand between upkeep inputs (Word of Renewal, new custom HP pots) and emergency inputs (Mirror of Ereoctes, current HP pots) which you only press as a reflex to survive a bad situation every now and then.

Obviously this is the extreme example of the Inquisitor class (which I find myself avoiding making builds for), but it illustrates how the piano problem is more severe with the custom potion feature.

I think many people would appreciate to have a way to keep these kind of buffs up all the time: custom pots, Word of Renewal, Blood of Dreeg, Pneumatic Burst, etc.

Someone mentioned a problem might be, that Ugdenbog belongs to a different expansion. I think noone would mind if you added the cauldron to the AoM expansion upon realease of FoA. Like you kept adding Monster infrequents with some patches, which also come with the AoM expansion.
As for the hub argument. I mostly use the Coven as my hub. Especially for developing characters. That is where skill respec is located. The stash, vendor, and training dummies are very close to the portal and Ugdenbog is the place for the essential bloom-farming…

To sum it up: Nothing stops you from putting the Cauldron where it belongs! In fact, the witches might not be amused if you put their Cauldron in some snowy mountain where not even the ingredients can be collected!

Nothing is stopping us since it’s not a problem. Each expansion requires earlier expansions, rendering any compatibility concerns irrelevant. We can add a cauldron to Ugdenbog just fine. We could rebuild Ugdenbog into a frozen theme park in FoA and it would have no impact on players with Ashes of Malmouth.

We already have examples of short-term buffs in this game with the Oil / Tincture system: how many people concentrated on those for this “I must be at max power all the time” FOMO? Outside of superboss fights specifically tailored to bring the times as low as possible, I have not seen a single build say that those tinctures were “needed” in any way, shape or form.

Even your Deceiver example doesn’t work when you go into actual gameplay - either you don’t have the skill points required to reach necessary breakpoints on all those “required” skills and you figure out the proper balance, or the best-performing Deceiver builds will condense those requirements with proper equipment (such as using Aura of Censure for passive damage reduction or item modifiers that add damage reduction to your main skill, such as Chaos FoI).

They are temporary items meant to be used throughout the leveling process to bypass otherwise very challenging battles where you don’t have all of your greatest capabilities unlocked. This game’s difficulty is fine - most builds won’t even notice not having the enhanced potion buffs as they’re rampaging through the trash mobs.

If there is a specific build issue that has far too much clunkiness, you can always bring up the build to the dev team and see if the skills on those builds can be changed to make it run more smoothly. Otherwise, this is a complete non-issue.
