Grim Misadventure #190 - They See Me Rerollin'

A Grim Misadventure upon ye and yer kin! Last time, we unearthed a collection of Legendary items coming in Fangs of Asterkarn. Today, we would like to talk about another major feature that will help you cater your loot to your particular needs.

Note: as always, everything you are seeing today is in active development and subject to change. Nothing is set in stone until it is.

We already talked in-depth about Ascendant Mode and the breadth of mechanics within it. Through the Ascension Altar, you will be able to not only modify the challenges you face, but also tip the scales of RNG in your favor by weighing all your drops to a desired damage type.

Hand-in-hand with these mechanics will be Affix Rerolling, a new ability coming to the talented Inventors across Cairn. Following a questline in the newly unveiled northern lands of Asterkarn, the homeland of the Kurn, you will have the option of giving your imperfect treasures another chance at monster-slaying.

The Inventor will gain the ability to reroll all of the item’s affixes individually, including the new Ascended affix non-Monster Infrequents will be able to roll in Ascendant Mode. If your item already has an ideal Prefix, but the Suffix made it unusable, you can reroll just the Suffix.

Doing so will strip the item of any loot bias that it originally rolled with. This means that a Fire-themed item will have equal chance of rolling all of its normally available affixes, rather than favoring fire affixes. If you were looking for more exotic combinations of loot and affixes, this will be a great opportunity to get your desired results. When rerolling, the quality of the existing affix is taken into consideration. If you are rerolling a rare affix, the reroll will also be of rare quality. If the affix is magical, you will have a chance to upgrade it to a rare affix in the process.

The reroll system is not just for affixes. It can also be used to reroll an item’s seed. For the uninitiated, the seed is a value every item generates with which determines how each of its attributes is rolled. So, if you found an item that has everything you could have wanted, but it rolled poorly on Conversion or some other critical stat, you can reroll these values separately from its affixes.

This mechanic can also be used on your unique Epic and Legendary items if you wish to reroll their seed!

Each time you reroll an item, its reroll costs will go up proportionally. These costs do have a cap, so you will never reach a point where an item becomes prohibitively expensive to reroll. You can never, in that sense, “brick” an item. Consequently, rerolling an item will make it untradeable with other players, but it can still be transferred between all of your characters via the stash.

You may find yourself wondering what the material cost of rerolling is. Iron Bits cover the Inventor’s fees, but the Dynamite does not work too well if you want to keep what is left. For Rerolling, you will need to gather the Ashes of Awakening.

Ashes

This rare material will most commonly be found in the new Ascendant Mode, but you will be able to entice their drops in lower difficulties with the use of the Ascension Altar. Incidentally, you may find yourself wanting to gather this new material if you are interested in awakening Epic items, but more on that later!

Crate is a very serious studio that would never do something so juvenile.

Oh this is so awesome! The amount of useless double rares that drop…yeah this is perfect

Z should talk to Blizzard about “Bricking” items…

“have a chance to upgrade it to a rare affix”
Obtaining double rare affixes too easily will shorten the lifespan of the game.
I suggest canceling this upgrade feature.

The game is 9 years old. I think it will be ok.

Of all the ways you could have implemented this feature, this is pretty much exactly what I was hoping for: you can choose what to keep and what to reroll; escalating but capped cost; still with RNG at its core.

Equal rarity conversion can already make dual rare waste very useful, I don’t think it’s necessary to upgrade the function.

FoA isn’t even out and it already has its first #DeadGame

the tradition continues :raised_hands:

So don’t use it if it doesn’t suit you .

It’s fine. It means that if you find a double rare with one good affix and one useless (which is the best you ever normally see), you will have the chance to make it into an actually very good item by rerolling. But it will probably need a lot of rerolling as the item will lose its bias. So if you want, say, a fire-based weapon with fire/fire rare affixes … good luck.

If you want to easily obtain double rare items, you can directly use the modifier.
I don’t want to see a BD with dual rare items all over the body.

My God, this will be like recreating each item in our own way, imagine the amount of things that will be able to change with this, recreation and combinations of builds, it will be a lot to do and work on, may the best inventor win…

And now we just need a release date.

I agree with the conversion of affixes with equal rarity, but it can turn yellow into green. This is too powerful, too much like a modifier.
