Rah'Zin Set is underwhelming now

Before the latest update adding high Chaos RR to WH, I have played Chaos WH for some time. I feel Rah’Zin Set is so bad as a specialized Chaos Set (Phys Rah’Zin? It is even worse) and is defeated by Ember’s Calling Set in most fields.
Here are two links of Rah’Zin and Ember’s Calling. The two builds have very similar gears, skills and devotions. Bloody Pox is used to compensate for weak AoE.

Pros of Ember’s Calling:

  • Higher OA and DA: take out the Intrepid Warboots (wich offers huge OA and DA), Ember’s Calling stiil has 350 more OA and 250 more DA.
  • Higher RR: after the lateat update, Rah’Zin has 18% RR (10% from Rah’Zin necklace and 8% from Ember’s Calling helm), Ember’s Calling has 35% RR (8% from Ember’s Calling helm, 12% from set bonus, 15% from necklace), 17% difference. Before the update, the two are 33% for Rah’Zin versus 43% for Ember’s Calling.
  • HIgher Armor: Ember’s Calling has about 300 more armor.
  • Max All Res: Ember’s Calling allows to use Whispers to gain 3% max res.
  • Higher Health: if the Rah’Zin build not using Crest of Ember’s Calling, replacing it to other medals (MIs or Mythical Black Star of Deceit), the health will be much lower, only 16k.
  • Better Conversions: Vit to Chaos is more valuable than Cold to Chaos, and Fire to Chaos helps Fiend/Flame Torrent.

Pros of Rah’Zin:

  • HIgher base damage: ~7% higher damage, partially offset the disadvantage in RR, but not all.
  • Higher Phys Res: Rah’Zin has much higher Phys Res. But for SR 30-31, Phys Res is not better than Armor. For higher difficulty (like SR 36-37), Phys Res cannot make up for the deficiency in low health, low armor, and lack of max res.
  • RD from granted skill: 20% RD. The only real advantage of Rah’Zin. However, MI weapon has the same effect, a little lower, 13%-15% RD.

Based on my personal experience, the defence/endurance of Rah’Zin is inferior to Ember’s Calling.

Comparison of two AAs:

  • Rah’Zin: 133% WD. 40% chance of 320% more can be regarded as 3%-4% increase. 133%*104%=138%.
  • Shard of Beronath: 124% WD. 110% charge level. 124%*110%=136%.

Two AAs have very close damage. This is why I say RD is the only real advantage of Rah’Zin. 2% more WD together with 7% more base damage are approximately equal to 17% RR in most cases.

Conclusion
Rah’Zin cannot deal more damage than Ember’s Calling, while the later has better defenses and much higher OA and DA.
Suggestions:

  • Rah’Zin needs more health, OA and DA.
  • The AA of Rah’Zin, you need to use 4 slot to get it, but it has a very small advantage than an augment. Is this rational? Compared to mastery AAs, FS has 155% WD at rank 16, RF and Savagery are 150%*115%=172% at just rank 16. Rah’Zin occupies 4 slot but is only 133% WD, this value is too low compared to its cost. At least raise it to 140%-145%.

Banana did a whole post and videos on it “couple” patches ago asking that very same question, seems the RZ root has circled back  -

how has everyone the latest update already? i’ve restarted steam several times and nothing.

last night’s update isn’t out yet, atleast not on my steam, but mi0 is referring to the changes already applied via the previous

rah’zin then wont get additional benefit from new changes/upcoming stuff, because that RR change will apply equally to ember’s too, maintaining the status quo at minimum (if not shifting it more to ember’s) (rah’zing losing 25 RR, ember’s losing 16)

Im not sure. In the changelog, Rah’Zin necklace and Ember helm are not adjusted. Only set bonus changed. So Rah’Zin loses 15% and Ember loses 8%.

ah right, true that might be a thing/distinction Zantai makes, i just assumed it was the “total”
But either way, still means rah’zin loses more, while already being lesser performing, so at worst it still means ember’s benefits more after new changes, if not at “best” status quo maintained where RZ is still behind

Isn’t this at least a little premature, we haven’t even been able to play with these changes.

You’ve completely ignored the 20% reduced res on Rah’zin’s AA, which has an outsized effect on enemies with high chaos res that are the most annoying. You’re not making up for them with augments either.

You’ve completely ignored the 18%-22% reduced res on MI weapon.
All Chaos builds can easily get RR and RD from MI weapon.

side note, since mi0 covered the weap part

%reduced res applies after -x% but before N’th reduced it actually has least impact on high res enemies and more impact on low res enemies, (since you nuke them further away from the 0 threshold where %reduced multiplies more after the -x%)

“As long as you use this fantasy double-rare MI, the builds are at parity” is not the argument you think it is.

no, you just need of abyss suffix affix won’t matter, easy to get on chaos items

I don’t have an opinion on the Rah’Zin vs Ember’s Calling debate but that specific point about conduits is something I’ve felt too in the past. +3% max all resistances is worth at least 1 - (1-80%)/(1-83%) = +17.6% total health except against physical damage. It’s hard to pass on that.

It is a vendor item.
Chaos has the best affix bias because the number of Chaos affixes is the smallest among all damage type. Demonic and of the Abyss have the highest chance among all rare affixes.

Just a minor point here I guess, but I’ve still never acquired an Ember’s Calling set, vs having a decent number of Rah’Zin. So ignoring stashed builds, I’d expect Ember’s to perform very well regardless due to the difficulty required to get it.

what do say to goredrinker then?

It should perform very well…
