Russian Translation

Hello all!

On behalf of Russian-speaking community we are trying to start Russian translation of Grim Dawn.

Main discussion is on grimdawn.ru’s forum: http://grimdawn.ru/forum/index.php?/topic/3-lokalizatciia

We are looking for translators and editors as well as any ideas on the organization and coordination of this translation.

Also we have some questions for devs:

  1. Does Grim Dawn have required cyrillic fonts?

  2. How (or when) we’ll be able to test our translation in game? I’ve heard about B16, is it correct?

  3. Does Grim Dawn support grammatical genders? It’s impossible to translate the game into Russian correctly without it.

For example, there’s an affix:

TagQualityBrokenWeapon01=Broken

In Russian it’s “Сломанный”, but it’s for masculine gender. For feminine gender it is “Сломанная”. For neuter gender it’s “Сломанное”. (+ Some words have plural form = 4th form “Сломанные”)

For example:

tagWeaponSwordA003=Shortsword -> “Короткий меч” (mg)
tagWeaponBluntA000=Club -> “Дубина” (fg)
tagWeaponSwordA002=Razor -> “Лезвие” (ng)
tagLegsA002=Leggings -> “Поножи” (plural)

Broken Shortsword -> Сломанный короткий меч
Broken Club -> Сломанная дубина
Broken Razor -> Сломанное лезвие
Broken Leggings -> Сломанные поножи

And so forth.

So there are two solutions for this:

  1. Localizing every adjective with three forms for every gender. Or splitting the word into stem (“Сломанн”) and three endings for every gender (“ый”, “ая”, “ое”, “ые”), which actually fall into several patterns (so we can input stem + pattern).

  2. Dumbing down all gender-sensitive words to one gender, for example, making all items’ translations in masculine gender. It solves all technical difficulties instantly, but the resulting translation will suffer (and in some cases will suffer greatly).

I don’t know, how it had been implemented in Titan Quest (it has Russian localization), maybe you can shed light on this question.

Thanks!

Update 12.01.2014:

We finally can test our translation thanks to developers and our community!

Update 01.07.2015:

Russian localization page on grimdawn.ru: http://grimdawn.ru/rus/

The page contains link to ZIP-file with localization as well as instruction to install it. I do my best to update version and date of latest localization at the bottom of this page. Also I do it in our twitter: http://twitter.com/GrimDawnRu

Permanent link to latest version of Russian translation: http://grimdawn.ru/loc/community_russian.zip

Awesome to see that the translations are being worked on. So far it’s been French, Polish, German and now Russian :slight_smile:

Good luck!

Thanks! (10 characters)

Not at the moment. If you can provide a complete list of the unicode character values, or a link to such information, we can add them.

Yes, in build 16.

No it doesn’t, you’ll need to to make everything one gender unfortunately.

Thank you, Rhis!

The unicode codes are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrillic_script_in_Unicode#Basic_Cyrillic_alphabet

Russian alphabet consists of all basic cyrillic alphabet plus letter “Ё” from cyrillic extensions:

0401 Ё
0451 ё

Maybe you’ll consider adding gender support? It was in TQ as far as I know.

Are you sure about TQ? I tried Russian version of TQ and left back to English just because some funny gender mistakes AFAIR (I may be wrong though and there could be grammar mistakes).

Yeah… it looks I was wrong and it is the same in TQ.

Ok, we’ll think about it… should we do this partially incorrect translation or wait for gender support (forever?).

I think any translation is better than none.

Hi, Rhis!
Can I ask something?
Will there be Russian localization after the release of game? Is this included in your plans?

Confirmed, gender support is present in TQ:

Yes, you are right. I remember about this as well now. There was something weird about translation though but I can’t remember what particulary. I thought it was gender support but probably it was just some grammar issue. Sorry for confusion.

Hah, can’t forget translation of “of the Glide” affix in TQ.
Translator decided that “Glide” was yet another character from legends.

Ah, I remember now… it was “колечащий” (“колечащий доратион пира” :)) that turned me off Russian version :smiley: Just could not see it any more :smiley:

We finally can test our translation thanks to developers and our community!

Ура! Мы наконец-то можем протестировать перевод игры на русский язык благодаря разработчикам и нашему сообществу!

Инструкция по русификации Grim Dawn: http://grimdawn.ru/2014/01/12/grim-dawn-добавлена-поддержка-русского-языка/

Перевод и его обсуждение ведутся на сайте grimdawn.ru: http://grimdawn.ru/forum/index.php?/forum/5-lokalizatciia/

Very nice!

Congratulations, looks really great :slight_smile: I will test your translation in the nearest future once I finish with my current character build - it requires English version for some reasons.

Что за слово “Урона”? (Урона в секунду) Грамотеи блин))

Есть слово Урон, а не Урона. Ты же не говоришь “Средний Урона”

Урон в секунду, но не урона. Урина блин))) :d

Поправим. Да вы и сами можете поправить.
Мы переводили вслепую вообще, не было возможности посмотреть в игре.

Ох, как же оно страшно-то. :frowning:

:wink:

Неуместные заглавные буквы и родительный падеж я потихоньку правлю, но там их много довольно. Понаписать недовольных сообщений я тоже могу, но перевод от этого сам не исправится.

P.s.: в плане характеристик еще сверяться с переводом tq можно (не знаю, сверялись ли с ним переводчики в отношении “обороноспособности”).

There are some problems spotted on the screenshot. I have not dug deep enough so may be my questions already have some answers.

  1. Does the game support plurals? Something like gettext which allows to form a translation depends on quantity.

  2. Is it possible to change capitalization of included strings? There are too much words written with Capital Letters, which is not suitable for Russian language. As I understand this came from string concatenation and using tokens, like MeetsRequirement=Required {%s0}: {%.0f1} plus tagCharAttributeName01=Cunning
    , so final strings looks like “Required Cunning: 100500”, or “Требуется Телосложение: 100500”. It would be much better if there were some way to make final string like “Требуется телосложение: 100500”.

PS: In my opinion all requirements would look better if they were rewritten to something like:
Requirements:
{%s0}: {%.0f1}
{%s0}: {%.0f1}
