SPOILER ALERT: Lore Discussion

Oh yeah, similar thing happened too in 3E with Set (the egyptian deity of evil and deserts) ursrurping the position of Seth (the Conan-style snake god), so the Yuan-Ti continue to worship Seth but actually strengthen Set instead…

Will there be more than 1 Forgotten God in the Expansion - since its “Forgotten Gods” plural :)?

I know Zantai already shot down the Korvaak = Empyrion theory, but isn’t it also directly debunked ingame by the Mogdrogen’s Ruminations note?

Rumblings among the humans speak of the mighty Empyrion’s return, but I know that to be the false hopes of helpless wretches. The identity of this forgotten power eludes me, and yet it feels so…familiar.

I spent 2 hours reading unrelated articles because I couldn’t stop myself. The worst part is that I couldn’t even scratch the surface

What is certain is that Korvaak is most definitely a huge a…hole - considering someone (maybe Chton with his dying breath) “made” everyone including the rest of the gods (Mog cant remember, though Lokkar does remember him) Forget him that he ever existed.

The historian note in the secret area / Altar of the Forgotten God explicitly mentions that such a deity is unknown and unwritten in history - which obviously emphasizes that there is a divine power at play erasing all knowledge/memory of this god from everyone.

Well based on how he treats you (or his Messenger does, whatever that thing is - an aspect or avatar of it or a separate creature?) it isn’t a helping humanity out of the kindness of its spark. It is using the worshippers to gain power and be able to confront Chthon. I doubt it is one of the old gods whom Mogdrogen knew, since in some form or another those are still worshipped somehow. It must be old and forgotten. And his symbol - that skeletal figure riding or subjecting a many-eyed beast - always made me wonder… Maybe it used to be something like a D&D Lich once? A powerful undead wizard who eventually transcended and became a god? Perhaps unrelated to the Witch Gods, or maybe he was a 4th member whom the others cast out…

I don’t think it was a divine power that erased all knowledge of Korvaak from existence, it just indicates how old he likely is. Same as how it is hard today to find out what sort of beings cro-magnon humans worshipped… information from that era is scarce. Now after the grim dawn, likely even more scarce.

Let us hope the villagers retain their sanity as to me they seem to be our only source of information since good ol’ Kymon ended up burning up most of the stuff

What about Archon Barthollem? He’s Empyrion’s servant, and yet, he doesn’t mentions anything about Korvaak, nor his Messenger, even after you confront Kimon, who is standing right beside him, or at least up until you liberate the last riftgate at the Necropolis…

Surely, as a servant of Empyrion, he would be able to tell what’s going on, unless somehow The Messenger is able to hide his presence from him by pretending to be Empyrion, or the Archon is just another servant of Korvaak.

Maybe it’s because the Kymon questline was left in a cliffhanger, but his indifference is rather intriguing…

Not bad, Big Z. I hope the expansion will actually live up to it’s name then.

Because lore and story are two different things, man. No one argues that GD’s lore is rich and fullfilling, but the story itself leaves much to be desired. I would also mention inconsistencies in what Big Z says, and what happens in the story, mainly since this isn’t a survival story anymore in the slightest.

Archon sounds like a human who was a powerful practitioner of a certain cult/religion that worshiped the entity known as Empyrion
This is why he is titled “Servant of Empyrion”. I doubt he is an otherworldly being in service of Empyrion

Also let’s not forget this

Lore can enrich and improve the story though. I do agree that the story could be better and it’s lacking in certain areas but it’s rather harsh to say it can’t be a multi-layered story.

There are several shrines of Korvaak which appear random. However each time when there is one it has burning torches.
Who visits these shrines Kymon?

And in the note you find at the shrine of the forgotten god it feels warm to the touch and torches that are burning. This was before the Grim Dawn. So was it Kymon of some other worshippers before Kymon?

Maybe some forgotten gods was one side that tried to harness the power of the void but got betrayed by Ch’thon.

Perhaps ascended gods need to fight among each other. And the primordials just like to watch. I wish anasteria would give us some more information.

Annie and Korinia probably can’t help us if even Mogdrogen can’t (who I assume is as old as the aetherials)

Also the shrines are probably visited by others

The faded visage of the god, etched into the wall of a chamber below the city was similar to ancient stones he had seen in other parts of the empire

Another curious thing is that we encounter a Harbinger in the place where the Eye of Korvaak is kept

May lead credence to the “Ch’thon=Korvaak=Ulzuin” theory, or it could just be the fact that Ch’thon and his minions are more familiar with the old gods than basically anyone else (Mogdrogen included) and would likely guard pieces of them to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands (like ours).

The Void touches a lot of odd places throughout Cairn; I’d assume this is no different.

Well since there were Chthonians going to the same source of power as Uroboruuk. I assume they know about it and trying to either stop Korvaak from getting his pieces together, or maybe use it to get Ch’thon back.

There are also Bloodsworn Cultists at the entrance and inside the tomb of Korvaak.

Maybe that Harbinger was sent there to collect the Eye for the Cult, so that they could destroy it, so they wouldn’t have to deal with Korvaak?

Edit: Got kinda of ninja’d.

The Children of Ch’thon used his blood so that they could use its power to breathe life into their own creations.

So having lots of worshippers could increase a god’s power. Maybe because that blood is aligned or linked.

From the note The Runes Fall Silent.

The thralls of Dreeg are as cryptic as ever, their mad ramblings speak of tides of blood shifting in a vast emptiness.

Just reminding you guys, in case it’s been missed, that Korvaak appears on every desecrated shrine.

Too lazy to check at this point

Care to provide a screen?

OMG that is so true - i have never paid attention to the screen depicting the desecrated shrine - that is indeed Korvaak

It means he has corrupted all possible shrines of other deities - he is such a nice fella - cant wait to stomp him.

Crate - you are amazing at adding so many so subtle hints through the game…
