This I agree with, though I don’t have an obvious solution in mind since those buttons just change how the topics are sorted underneath the categories.
EDIT: I’ve also now disabled the Suggested Topics section. I agree that it’s not going to do anybody any favors.
Yes, I do agree. The new design sucks in general, but infinite scrolling is just awful in particular. It’s totally unconvenient. I personally hate this “tablet-friendly” design fashion, because it makes sites PC-keyboard-mouse-unfriendly. And who plays GD on a tablet, eh? We all use our PCs.
The old design was very convenient and even excellent. If we cannot return to the old look, can we just have those navigation bars with page numbers? All and all, that’s freaking golden classic design around the internet!
EDIT: Yeah, editing of posts in the new design is more convenient, but this doesn’t help with its downsides.
PS Ah, now I understand why I couldn’t log in as “Victor Brand”! I’m not “Victor Brand” anymore, I’m “Victor_Brand” now.
It must be because I’m getting older and I don’t really understand how the kids talk these days, but are we seriously comparing a piece of software to the disease that killed several members of my extended family? Really?
That’s because this ill fashion spreads as a disease around the internet and kills web communities. This forum engine makes you feel as if you are writing your thoughts on a roll of toilet paper.
Considering that Toilet paper also lacks pagination, I find the comparison apt. Btw: it’s not Tablet Friendly, as I am a tablet user and this ruins either my ability to reply, or ability to view more than three forum topics on my screen, cause I use my tablet in landscape mode!
Ah, so like every other forum in existence right? Because, ya know, that’s usually how they end up. It’s just a place to spill your thoughts out.
I challenge you to give me an actual “reason” that it’s “unconvenient”, as you so succinctly put it. A reason other than the fact that you “don’t like it”. Because I read your first post above and all I think is, “Man, that’s the weakest fucking argument. It isn’t even an argument. It’s just a person claiming something isn’t convenient but isn’t able to even say why it’s inconvenient.”
Seriously, I’d love to hear one good, viable… reason. A reason that doesn’t involve, “Oh booho, this timeline is “different”. I just don’t understand it. Someone hold me. I’m lonely. And scared of what I don’t know.”
I’m dying to hear how having “pages” improves anything. How it somehow makes anything more “convenient”. Because, while I was at first on the fence about a timeline, after spending a little bit of time with it I’m not seeing any issue with it at all. And it’s working JUST fine for me on PC… with the added bonus it works lovely on my phone while I’m taking a dump.
Some suggestions / personal preferences / observations:
Let us hide the top bar or only display it when you’re at the top of the page.
It takes up space but it’s not particularly useful for normal browsing.
The posts could be a bit wider.
I know other forums use similar layouts but I’d still want the option of using a bit more of the space on the sides.
A larger button to go back to the categories (General, Gameplay, etc.)
Would make browsing easier.
The typing cursor doesn’t always seem to be visible.
Not sure if it’s my browser.
Display the actual categories in the browser tabs instead of "Latest Grim Dawn/…"
With multiple tabs open, those titles aren’t descriptive.
Some info is missing or harder to see compared to old forums.
Such as topic starter name, last poster (having to hover over the avatar isn’t as useful).
Well, I’ll tear off a piece of this paper and write some thoughs.
Seriously, this matter is well known and well discuissed around the internet. This “infinite scrolling” feature lacks a very important internet feature: searching of the information. I suppose that on the sites like FB (or Russian FB clone, VK aka VKontakte) it was introduced intentionally. We conversate on the internet more and more. But what are you speaking of? Using this infinite scrolling feature on FB, do you have a patience to scroll down, say, two weeks ago? Or two months? So, people conversate on the internet only about things that are current. They just forget what was a couple of weeks or couple of months ago, set aside previous year. This makes people more vulnerable for manipulative technologies, hype etc. There is only “today” and no “yesterday”.
But GD community is not for hype. GD is very smart and complex game, yeah? And GD community is not only place for daily chattering, but also a database of thoughts and ideas. And we need some handy and convenient instruments in order to navigate through this database. We need memory, we need our history, our annals. And mankind still haven’t developed better instruments for this goal than indices, and those are pagination and navigation bars in particular.
You have the same instruments you had before. Pages would be nice, yes I’m a fan too, but navigation bars? What are you talking about? You have the same sub-sections of the forum you had before.
