The Strangest Feedback

I think it depends based on a choice made at some point?

Um, no she did not.

If you tell him to go after her, he doesn’t even make it past the trolls, which is why his corpse is in one of their meat piles.

In my defense, it has been years since I leveled up a character and did those respective quests, so my memory of the dialogue was hazy.

My point was: when you’re faced with multiple life-ending threats, and roving bands of super-soldiers willing to pillage your town (and other more… physical actions) is the best-case scenario, I would not be surprised in the slightest if Elsa saw Mornay approaching her carefully designated hiding spot and shot him simply to keep her hiding spot a secret.

Captain Somer → Unsexy appearance, unsexy voice, unsexy personality

Korinia → Unsexy appearance, sexy voice, sexy personality

Byscilla → Sexy appearance, sexy voice, sexy personality

So over the course of two expansions, Crate seemed to have learned their lesson and figured out how to make attractive and likeable female characters. I hope our future Kurn Chieftainess (yes, “chieftainess” is an actual word and I hope you use it) would be one as well.

Speaking of which, a (supposedly) redheaded female military leader was not without historical precedent. When King Prasutagus of the British Celtic Iceni tribe died, his wife, Queen Boudica, eventually led a revolt against the Romans. She managed to win one small skirmish, before she and her ragtag army was utterly destroyed by Legio IX Hispana. It’s worth noting that the narrative of “Kurns being defeated by the Empire and the Black Legion” has some historical inspiration from Celts in the British Isles being subjugated by the Romans. The name “Kurn” itself may have been inspired by the Irish Kerns.

Now heading back to our Kurn Chieftainess again, it’s clear that Crate had some fan service in mind because she’s exposing her midriff, upper thighs, and some cleavage, even in freezing temperatures. So in other words, they’re sacrificing realism for a sake of a sexy appearance. That gets an A+ from me.

But there is still the question of sexy voice and sexy personality. Crate has the money to afford voice actresses with sexy voices and they’ve proven that over two expansions. So I have no worries here.

As for sexy personality? Well even as a chieftainess she could still adopt a “damsel in distress” personality and ask the hero to help save her clan/tribe/whatever. After all, her people have been defeated before and she’d hate it if that happened again. Certainly this would be more attractive than if she had a Mary Sue attitude or a grumpy Somer-like attitude. So actually I think the guy emailing Zantai has somewhat of a point - at least make our future Kurn Chieftainess have a likeable if not sexy personality.

The hell?! Been playing GD from before 1.0 and never noticed this… fuck, man… after all this time there are still little tidbits here and there, amazing

Um, I don’t consider myself an award winning writer or anything, but I would not imagine the leader of a nation that has suffered immensely from the constant threat of a foreign nation to be particularly inviting to a known enemy showing up at their door, even if they have the best intentions. Begging the player to help them feels out of character to me. Desperation certainly plays a part in why they are even willing to hear an Erulanian out instead of beheading them on the spot.

I guess you could have a sort of “Leia” narrative where initially she detests having a scoundrel like Han attempt to rescue her, but eventually she softens and warms up and recognises the value that outsiders can bring to her. It goes hand-in-hand with getting faction rep points and also provides some satisfying character growth (on her part).

She probably beheaded the person who let that happen :smirk:

I would advise to thread carefully as this is a touchy subject that will bring out rats from woodwork from both sides of political spectrum and might endanger your reputation as a largely,as far as im aware, apolitical game developer. The content is absolute lunacy, the essence or point in itself though is, well, sort of true. Sort of as in there is lots of female representation in grim dawn, in positions commonly held by men,aka leadership roles , which is a good thing but in a very traumatized digital world regarding politics today, it can be seen by some that have been exposed to too much of what is a political agenda in gaming, well as a “red flag”.
To address the point I agree there is slight over representation of women in protagonistic roles, but none i’ve found particularly bad,and Dahlia I think is cool. So while I understand the essence of his point the way he expresses it is just what the actual fuck. I suspect what someone else said, that this person might not be mentally well, and posting this publicly to mock him despite being an outrageous email, might spark reactions you did not intend to and i find it in bad taste to post a feedback email that you dislike, rightfully so, but still, that you dislike, for forum goers to awe, to “point and laugh” and circlejerk about.

People will find issues in anything if they try hard enough.

Fact of the matter is, the split of major characters is almost exactly 50/50, by design, down even to the loading screen art. Anyone trying to twist reality and say otherwise is looking to start an argument and not being remotely objective. Nevermind that two of arguably the most important characters in the plot, Inquisitor Creed and Ulgrim, are both male and have massive power fantasies in their backstories.

Some characters rise to prominence because they were fan favorites. Daila was a flavor NPC with a one-shot lore note I wrote on a whim that got so much attention in Early Access that we developed her more.

There has been a perception for years now that developers are supposed to just silently put up with customer disrespect. On a personal level, I will absorb much abuse on the forums and social media, but have 0 tolerance for anyone disrespecting my fellow members of Crate. And while this message was inadvertently targeting much of my personal work, it was addressed to the team and ridiculing them.

I am content with calling this behavior out so that anyone in the future may think twice about how they approach us. Critique is fine, and even welcomed. Our own forum rules clearly state the following, and I stand by what I wrote all those years ago:

1. We don’t need defending.
We read almost everything and we can take criticism. Criticism is Not going to suddenly make us flip our shit and change everything that we are doing with our games.

But there is a wide ravine between critique and mutual respect and the utter lack of it. People that wish to be a part of our community can learn this or be expunged from it.

I am sorry as im not familiar enough with forum controls to accurately format my post, grim dawn is my favorite game and this games forum has been the only one I ever cared to post in my whole life but I am a lurker not a poster.
Well it’s just I would simply dislike to see Crate get any sort of bad rep from anyone as I like Grim Dawn so much, so I rushed to make my post because I care about Crate and not because I agree with the email or the person.
I agree with and find it a good thing sticking up for workmates and friends, I would’ve simply dismiss it to not bring any attention to it or its composer, bad or good.
I’ve noticed what he has ,and am willing to concede that I am wrong as I only very recently started to get more into grim dawns development but I do not agree with this email and also find it quite bad, like real bad, to the point where I grow genuinely concerned about the person well being rather then being outraged by the things he wrote.
I am replying out of courtesy simply because you also cared enough to reply to what I said which is suprising to me, I quite liked your response and do not disagree with it, I find it odd to have warranted your attention so I’ll take the opportunity to say, keep up the good work, the rest of the team as well, can’t wait for FoA

I wouldn’t worry. Whoever wrote the e-mail doesn’t have it all straight. (Or whatever the expression is.)

Grim Dawn has done a great job of being a game. It only deals with things that actually matter to the game setting and world. It doesn’t push any zealous political messages and doesn’t oversexualize anything. It’s just good story and excellent gameplay. Just the way it should be imho.

Well, that was fucking just a wee bit insane. And it confused the hell outta me too. The only thing I feel certain about is that they are also confused. About everything.

On the brightside they gifted us the word ‘lesbiotic’.

My favorite thing about Crate is their bad taste and lack of class. They’ve survived all this time, unscathed, not being afraid of the PC mentality. I feel confident they will continue to do so while coming up aces.

Besides, call me crazy but my gut instinct says you are going to be hard-pressed to find anyone anywhere willing to get within walking distance of whatever that letter was - no matter what their feelings are about anything that person said - dude was all over the map, literally, and then walked completely off it.

Plus, it isn’t like Zantai posted any identifying info - which would have been truly bad taste.

As a man hating lesbian, I can confirm this person is 100% correct. The writing of this game perfectly aligns with all my politics. Thank you, Crate!

That were 5 minutes of my life that I can’t bring back , how in the earth you LL maintain a long hair in post apocalypse it’s totally normal to be short , gaming is not for everyone

For a second I thought this feedback was about men who hate lesbians, which, I agree, it would be pretty weird if those were overrepresented in Grim Dawn NPCs.

Yes, I was also confused for a while. The problem is the lack of hyphenation. It should be “man-hating lesbians”.
