They are definitely playing a high stakes game. But since they have the whole concept nailed down right from the start, they have the potential to achieve that mission. Unlike GD which started as SP and tried to add MP later which didn’t work out all too well.
thing is : if you introduce “stress test mechanics” like greater rifts in d3 for example where you have to push optimization to the limit (a typical "always online feature) it becomes detrimental for few reasons. 1 ) it kills builds variety 2) people will get tired and ask for more “content”.
I noticed they already introduced an online dungeon with a timed hall of fame and rewards and it is a step towards that, then sp goes to hell. Who wants to play the slow build? Also after running 300 of those ppl will ask more stuff on the “online” side.
At the same time you have to make sp crowd happy, they want “real” content to keep their interest in the game : lot of acts, a big world to explore, crapton of items/sets, multiple layers of customization, and freedom in building aka theorycrafting. That requires lot of time and effort.
Me Like I mixture, I have 3+k hours in POE, and only 429 hours in GD, and half of that in D3. Even though I don’t really adore POE, I play it more often than GD and D3 combined, even as a solo self found player most of the time, and then jump in pub groups sometimes to farm.
Even just messing around, experimenting and trying wacky combos in POE consumes a bit of those hours played.
The different leagues, modifiers and events and frequent resets helps keep things fresh in POE
D2was made by a big company, with lot of funds and people working on it. Poe,yeah i played it for thousand hours or so , i don’t like the overemphasis on trade.
Edit : I have nothing against wolcen, i actually hope it turns out to be good so i might have another game to play.
Similar opinions after watching some stuff. I hope they do SP justice and not get to absorbed in the MP part of it
I also do hope the game is as good as it seems
It’s not slow in movement, it’s slow in terms of efficiency. For example in d3 only some builds/classes are looked for grift farming. You want the best speed possible and optimization requires the sacrifice of the vast majority of builds/skills.
Picked this up during the Steam sale - once I figured out why I was getting an “input not supported” message on my screen (game was setting the resolution to some stupid high value), I got in…seems OK so far. I’ll keep an eye on it and will check out new updates. For $15, I think it will be worth it.
I feel a little apprehensive about how it might turn out. I want it to be good since the stuff they are promising look really exciting but they seem over ambitious to me
I don’t want it to be another Legends of Dawn fuck up.
They are making good mechanical progress, and interacting with players for ideas and feedback etc on the Steam Forums and Discord.
And just changing things from their original vision, for the better as they go along
Just take a look at their recent dev post on signature skills in the passive tree - very cool idea
Also they are hiring more people, they put up new job openings. So I don’t think cash flow is a problem https://wolcengame.com/jobs/
Steamspy estimated copies keeping rising as well. Current peak is 72k, whereas it was like in the mid 30k earlier in the year
Good, doesn’t look like it’ll turn out like Legends of Dawn
Worst part is the developers didn’t think they made a bad game and ended up making another ARPG which got bad ratings as well
I think they honestly believe they make “hardcore” games
Wolcen looks cool, would be nice to see what we end up with when they’re done with it
