Wolcen now on Early Access on Steam

thats good to know. but did Ryhkker ever play Grim Dawn?

Hmm, don’t think he did, at least not publicly acknowledging it.
I know he dabbled a bit in PoE

a quick search of his channel does not reveal a Grim Dawn vid

figured as much. I bet Blizzard pays him up for it. anyway too bad cuz Grim Dawn is just as good if not better than Wolcen at least for now, and GD deserves much more publicity.

GD has sold over a million copies, I think most people who are into ARPG already know of it.

Wolcen is up to 70+ k sales based on Steamspy, so it’s still pretty unknown, and the jump to the top 15 global sales, even without a price drop just from a Rhykker video says as much

For me it is actually more promising than Lost Ark, mostly due it’s also playable offline which is an huge Factor for me. I don’t know if it can beat Grim Dawn for me, however it will be a nice addition to GD, Torchlight 2 und Diablo 3 for me.

New patch is out and annoying crushes are back =( BTW reflect in Wolcen is on early beta PoE level - one fireball offscrean and you are a corpse, lol. Such mechanic, much skill.

Grim Dawn is the best game in the genre right now, while Wolcen have a potential to be even better.

Not today though, and not launch. Because while the engine is amazing, and the developers knows how to use it, they are not most experienced in this type of games yet. It will take time and much more try and error before they reach Grim dawn level, not a year or two. They will launch their game and it would be like Path of Exile at launch…

But Wolcen have all the potential for the long run, even more than Grim Dawn. Though they will never have a brilliant story, their lead writer is almost an amateur who came to them to “try something new” and “up his level of creativity” and such things.

And they made the mistake of “finishing” the story before they finish developing their assets, which reveal their shallow knowledge. You never announce “finishing” of writing the story until you release the game. Design is always bigger than story, so you have to adapt story to the design most of the time, not the other way around.

They will learn, in their good time, and until then, we are glad to have Grim Dawn, whioch will be even better by the time they release their game.

Wolcen is on sale right now on Steam, for a couple of days, in case anyone was waiting for a sale. Pace of progress is still accurately described as glacial though, this is one EA title I won’t be picking up. Especially since devs clearly state they won’t release more actual content than the first act (of five planned) before the proper release. Which for me is a terrible way to run EA, but whatever floats their boat.

Edit: it’s 25% off, forgot to mention.

Edited 10/char

Oh wow… 25% off … that so great.
Ha, ha.

This is really sad, they had some cool ideas, but let´s be real, they have been at it seemingly forever, and nothings gets done. Shame really, nice game engine and all.

I bet we´ll be playing GD 2 before this one gets finished.

where did they say that ? That does sound like an awful idea…

Yeah, I’ve had Wolcen for a bit now and was a bit surprised when I saw them mention that they wouldn’t release any further content areas until 1.0. Way different than how Crate handled it and I admit I am a little put off by that approach.

It actually says it right in the EA Disclaimer on the store page but I’ve seen them mention it in some of the News updates I believe.

I do respect them for their honesty, most companies would never admit this. But I’m afraid ultimately it will turn out to be a self inflicted injury that could have been avoided.

Ah, so this is how it goes. I see.

Wake me up in 5 years then. MAYBE the game will be ready.

True. Early supporters want to see more than just new mechanics added while they wait for a complete version. I’m also put off by the incomplete spots in the skill-tree thing. I check the game out briefly from time to time but it does seem like it’s going to be a while before it is ready.

Few paragraphs down:

These features are not related to the planned updates during the Early Access Alpha or the Beta and are still subject to changes during the development of the game. Meaning that even if some elements are “in progress”, it will not mean that it’s planned for the next update. For instance, Act II, III, IV and V are not supposed to be accessed during the Alpha or the Beta version of the game, only at the release, but you will know when we’ll be working on them.

I just read through their Roadmap myself and it seems they are only keeping the rest of the game tucked away from the alpha and beta testers. It sounds like they don’t want to follow in Grim Dawn’s footsteps and keep the entire game on track with testers and instead just want help with the first act and then they will finish the rest. I don’t personally like this idea since it sounds really sneaky to me like they plan on half-assing the rest of the content and nobody can say anything because nobody will know until they’ve already bought the game.

I don’t know if I consider it “sneaky”, per se, just fairly disappointing that they are going to lock alot of their supporters out from providing feedback. I’m not against them having a core group to help with early testing (naturally:rolleyes:) but they really should throw everyone else a bone once that testing is done. There is only so much a small group can do and Grim Dawn is testament to the fact that a lot of the polishing and bugs come to light once the larger body can get some hands on time with it.

Disappointing for the players but more importantly just bad for business. Having a polished product on launch day can be, often is, the difference between getting slaughtered in the reviews or getting a nice sales boost.

It says

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?
“The Early Access version of the game will include the major gameplay features. The storyline, main quests, side quests, and other contents will only be available once the game is released.”

which is odd in itself but does not say anything about areas not being added before the end of EA

Horrible decision imo, oh well, par for the course with these guys, they also had some strange decisions during the Kickstarter
