Wolcen now on Early Access on Steam

Liking the mage staff “auto attacks”, no resource cost on these

monster hit reactions

and online play is here, next patch, but was rolled back, should be back up tommorrow I think

In the upcoming weeks, we will be releasing what we call the “Play Online mode” on the beta branch. In this mode, you will have the same experience as when you were playing offline but your save files will be stored on our server to avoid cheating and you will have access to online-exclusive features ! Just to be clear, we are not talking about coop here!

The Daily Dungeon is a feature that will only be available in the play online mode and that could be summed up as “Randomly generated dungeon with a speedrun twist”.
Everyday, a randomly generated dungeon will be available to all players. This generated dungeon will be different from the random dungeon you have access through the bounty NPC and will be the same for every players.
Your goal is to find the boss room and exit of the dungeon as fast as possible while crushing everything in your way. Your performance will be scored by a combination of time and monster killed and displayed in a leaderboard. At the end of the day, the player with the best score will receive a special reward.

We think daily dungeons offer a new and interesting way to play Wolcen mixing grinding, speedrun and indirect player vs. player.

We cannot wait to hear your feedbacks regarding the Daily Dungeon and see what crazy builds you come up with.

Multiplayer

Now… onto the question on everyone’s lips : where is co-op multiplayer ?
So there is no misunderstanding: the play online mode, isn’t co-op multiplayer. You won’t be able to play with your friends with its release.
Unfortunately, multiplayer isn’t ready yet. However, the play online mode is the first step on the long road toward playing in the same game with your friends.
Before we can allow multiple players to join the same game, we have to develop a number of networking systems that will synchronise the player’s data. To do that, those data have to be stored on our servers so we can send to you, for example, the characters of the friends you are playing with.
This is what the Play Online mode is all about : lay the foundations on which the multiplayer but also all our online ecosystem will be built on.
This game mode is opening a lot of opportunity for us to make new features like the daily dungeon we mentioned above. It will also allow us to start implementing technical features invisible for our players like telemetry so we can have statistics about the game, the skills and builds you are using and a lot of various data we will be using for balancing.

Can anyone of you give me your opinion:
How does Wolcen - Lords Of Mayhem gameplay feel when compared with Grim Dawn and Path Of Exile - more like GD or more like POE?

Also, skills, animations, weapons, skill tree system, ambient, is it all closer to POE or GD?

I know you can rotate skill wheel, I know it’s alpha, I know it was Umbra, skip these unnecessary parts.

can someone answer me, if the newest update have controller support?

gameplay/combat feels sluggish and inaccurate. its still in alpha so this should receive polish later.

Any V1.0 in sight or is this another game that could easily sit in Alpha/Beta for another few years? I’ve given up on early access games to save myself from getting bored with them. Beta testing was fun in the early 2000s since it was extremely difficult to gain beta access. Now, it seems every game in development requires beta testing just to play the game.

You haven’t provided the proper answer.

I know you can rotate skill wheel, I KNOW IT’S ALPHA, I know it was Umbra, skip these unnecessary parts.

hold on, hold on, coop won’t be p2p but instead tied to their servers? why?

Considering it encourages you to play hybrid and lets you learn any skill you like, so long as you get the skill tome for it, and that it has a passive skill tree similar to PoE, but with nodes organized in different classes, I think that Wolcen is the result of GD and PoE sharing a night together after a feel drinks…

That is what I can conclude from watching all those trailers and gameplay videos. But I was curious to see comments regarding the overall feel. Is it really 50%-50% when it comes to gameplay feel or it leans towards either of these two?

I think that it’s more inclined towards PoE, but that’s just me.

Feels like neither IMO, it is it’s own thing.

Melee combat has an auto dash gap closer, and combo strikes as well as a charged attack. It has dodge roll, so it’s more like Dark Souls/MMO.

It has the passive tree/wheel thing like Path of Exile, but attributes are increased manually ala classic RPG style.
Skills level up as you use them like POE, but from what I see in their roadmap, in the future each skill will have it’s own leveling tree that you can customize each skill a bit like Diablo 3’s rune system. See here

It’s also in alpha, so things will change drastically over the next year, as they add more mechanics, skills, monsters and a whole ACT1 which will be on a different larger map than what is currently available

I got this today and spent a few hours in it.

I like the passive tree, and the combat is off to a good start. The mage staff update was nice as well.

I hope the skill system is getting more info added to it. Saying spell Y is level 11 without any numbers is not something I enjoy.

The map is also not something I enjoy. The black spot for me, in the minimap and the world map in general is meh.

Overall, I see a lot of promise, and will be following its development.

ok i just talked to one of their developers

tehy are going to have an offline mode

. however their online mode will be hosted by them only, and there won’t be private servers or multiplayer mods. and they are going to be doing alot of stuff similar to D3.

this might be exciting for some but for me. im hoping there is still a window for a refund.

Spent 10 hours playing Wolcen. It’s ambitious, it’s trying to be so many things at the same time by mashing many mechanics from different games and adding something new.

  • Passive ‘starmap’ from PoE with an added twist of being able to rotate parts of it.
  • Flasks as in PoE that recharge when killing stuff.
  • Attribute points.
  • No classes, but you can learn any skill via scrolls that drop from mobs/are sold by merchant and level them. A system that is similar to D3 runes will be added in an upcoming patch.
  • Truly open world; Imagine elder scrolls type of ‘open’.

However an alpha is still an alpha, the combat is clunky, the effects for a lot of spells look weird or over the top (sheer amount of particles make some spells look silly). Map/minimap is useless, skill descriptions are missing and the world itself is boring to explore with no memorable locations (only a small portion is available to explore).

Also the stat descriptions on items are just plain weird (i.e: 6% chance to immobilize enemies during 2.7s on each strike) xD

I’d suggest to hold off from buying it and just follow it’s development, see how it turns out. Currently the devs are very active and put out updates constantly. But hey, the team is small and the game is very ambitious, you’ll never know what might happen

Edit: Typos

While watching YouTube footage I had impression that Wolcen - Lords Of Mayhem looks like a mix of Path Of Exile and Grim Dawn. Now that I’ve tried it out I got to say it has nothing on Grim Dawn at all. Grim Dawn reminiscence was maybe due to its great graphics, since Path Of Exile has inferior graphics compared to Grim Dawn, and I’d dare to say even when compared to Titan Quest - Immortal Throne.

While I was playing it, it felt more like a mix of Path Of Exile, obviously, and Shadows - Heretic Kingdoms. If you have never heard of Shadows - Heretic Kingdoms, well, you can’t know what I’m talking about. Passive skill tree, manual skill level-up, flask mechanics and some animations are definitely comparable with Path Of Exile, and influenced by it. What is similar to Shadows - Heretic Kingdoms is main menu interface, massive graphics details, a bit slower character movement and some animations.

By the way, Shadows - Heretic Kingdoms was made by the team Games Farm, who made Vikings - Wolves Of Midgard. If/While you are waiting for Wolcen, you may get a taste of Shadows first.

Here is 30 min of dungeon gameplay from the latest version of Wolcen. These dungeons are like semi challenge areas i guess as they increase in difficulty the deeper you go. They are procedurally randomly generated and are accessed in town through the bounty master. Every time you active one of these “challenge/ Bounties” you will get a fairly different experience.

I end the vid with abit of playing around with the Players House editor.

Wolcen 30 min underground gameplay and house editor.

i don’t get it. if they don’t rely on their server for everything why no lan mode?

i have to inform you that your char uses a shovel.

a Legendary Shovel bro!

are you trying to tell me that you are DIGGING it?

:D:D:D I will have to delve into it some more to answer that…
